ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The FIFA World Cup has finally arrived. The tournament kicked off on Thursday, and Team USA will play its first match against Paraguay on Friday night.
Rochester’s East End is preparing to welcome fans on Friday for a viewing party for the match. The East Avenue and Alexander Street area will be closed from 5 to 11 p.m. for the party. There will be two food trucks, games, and live music from the Zac Brown Tribute Band leading up to the game. Then, at 9 p.m., the game will be screened on two giant outdoor screens and at bars in the area.

There will also be giveaways where people can score World Cup tickets. Blake Gianniny, the event promoter of the watch party, says they’re expecting a few thousand fans.
“One thing the city is good at is throwing big parties. There’s going to be a few hundred thousand people coming down for the Jazz Fest. We’re going to have a few thousand people down here for this one. Get here early. There’s plenty of public parking, street parking, lot parking,” Gianniny said.
Some bar and restaurant owners in Rochester say they’re expecting a boost in business. Gov. Kathy Hochul signed legislation allowing bars and restaurants to serve alcohol until 4 a.m. during the tournament, so they can stay open for late games. In addition, the state is allowing World Cup event organizers to apply for a one-day permit allowing them to serve alcohol off-site.
As with any big event, Rochester Police will work to make sure everyone is safe. However, closing off the East End to traffic with barriers isn’t anything new for RPD. For the past year and a half, RPD has set up a “Special Event Zone” on Saturday nights to improve safety for bars and restaurants in the area.
