Thanks to its multiplayer and new mode, Rhythm Paradise Groove could be more than I ever wanted ...Middle East

Whether that's a motion-controlled console, Wario minigame series, freaky Mii island paradise or giant brick with a screen on it, Nintendo has never been one to shy away from what any other company might deem unsellable.

More than a decade on from the last game in the series, Rhythm Paradise Groove picks up the noble cause of weird and wonderful games and runs with it, and I spent a lovely couple of hours playing it.

For the uninitiated, Rhythm Paradise is just a collection of rhythm minigames. You're given a brief overview of the rules of the game – tap A on the beat – and then it's off to the races.

It's the kind of game that one could easily dismiss, but as soon as you pick it up, it sinks its musical claws into you.

This has haunted me while I continue to wait for the full game.

For that reason, instead of just talking about the games themselves which are as fantastic as ever, I want to talk about the two parts of the game that surprised me the most.

The collaboration saw myself and three others as ninjas guarding the castle walls from an onslaught of arrows.

Fortunately, while we were all desperately incompetent at blocking the arrows (apologies to my feudal lord), we all had a fantastic time in the process.

But even more dramatic was our free for all, which saw the four of us counting down to zero in our heads to see who could grab a slice of cake closest to the timer.

Needless to say, I will be inflicting these games on my unsuspecting friends in the weeks to come.

Beatspell is a new mode that introduces what is effectively a miniature RPG into Rhythm Paradise.

Casting a fireball required tapping A twice, while healing up required you to tap A, then B, then A again.

It starts out incredibly simple, but when you're in the middle of a boss fight, it does begin to get a bit stressful.

From what I could surmise, it did appear that it was a fairly short mode – I could only see up to four levels were available in the demo I played – and I hope that this isn't the case.

So, that's the long and short of it. Rhythm Paradise Groove is pretty much everything that fans of the series could hope for, and even a little bit more.

As the sweltering British summer approaches, I cannot wait to while it away making a buff man juggle apples on his biceps to the beat.
