It was a solid day in the Cubs’ minor league system with two of the four teams picking up wins. The Iowa Cubs rolled to an easy win behind a complete effort up and down the lineup, and South Bend got a huge day from Kane Kepley at the plate that helped power them to a W. Let’s get to it.

Triple-A Iowa Cubs
The Iowa Cubs opened up their week-long series with the Louisville Bats (Reds) with an easy, complete 10-2 win. The Cubs got on the board right away in the first, jumping out to a 3-0 lead. Owen Miller got Iowa on the board with an RBI double in the second at-bat of the game, then BJ Murray went deep, adding two more. Before an out was recorded, the Cubs led 3-0.
The game stayed that way until the fourth inning, when Iowa tacked on four more. With two runners on and one out, Christian Bethancourt belted a three-run homer, doubling the Cubs’ lead. Following that, Miller again produced with an RBI single.
From there, it was mostly cruise control for Iowa. James Triantos had a two-run homer in the fifth, and Jonathan Long added a solo blast in the seventh. The Bats’ runs came in the fifth inning – a sacrifice fly and an RBI single off Andrew Wantz. But the rest of the Cubs’ pitching staff was lights out, and Iowa took this one 10-2.

The Knoxville Smokies lost a seesaw battle with the Montgomery Biscuits (Rays) in their opener on Tuesday. After a scoreless first two innings, the Biscuits got to Smokies’ starter Grant Kipp to the tune of four runs in the third inning, which put Knoxville in an early hole.
However, the Smokies would start to slowly but surely chip away at a comeback. In the top of the fourth, Owen Ayers got them on the board with a solo homer. In the fifth, Hayden Cantrelle added one more with a sacrifice fly to cut the deficit in half to 4-2. In the sixth, Carter Trice tied the score with a two-run blast.
In the seventh, the Smokies took their first lead of the game when Ariel Armas broke the tie on an RBI single. Scoring in four straight innings was good enough to give Knoxville the lead, but it wouldn’t be enough to win the game, unfortunately. The Smokies’ lead didn’t last very long as the Biscuits got back on the board with two runs off Marino Santy in the bottom of the seventh, giving them a 6-5 advantage.
Owen Ayers led the eighth off with a double, getting Knoxville back into business, but from there, they went down in order to close out the game and fell 6-5.

A big second inning helped the South Bend Cubs pick up a win over the Peoria Chiefs (Cardinals) on Tuesday. After a scoreless first inning, the Cubs’ bats broke out for a four-run bottom of the second. Cole Mathis broke the scoreless tie with a solo homer, then a few batters later Kane Kepley busted the game wide open with a three-run blast, making it 4-0.
The Chiefs picked up a pair of runs off Nazier Mulé in the fourth to make it 4-2, and that’s how the score remained until the bottom of the seventh. In the seventh, the Cubs would add a little bit of insurance. First, Matt Halbach brought home Josiah Hartshorn on an RBI single, then Leonel Espinoza drove Halbach, which boosted the lead to 6-2.
Peoria added one run in the ninth, but South Bend held on for a 6-3 win.

— South Bend Cubs (@SBCubs) June 9, 2026 Hey, the Cubs Have a New Top-100 Prospect!Low-A Myrtle Beach Pelicans
The Pelicans let a late lead get away from them in their series-opening loss to the Augusta Green Jackets (Braves). After a scoreless first three innings, the Green Jackets got out to the first lead of the ballgame with a sac fly off David Bracho. That was the only run of the night that Bracho allowed, though, and he was really solid through his four-inning outing.
The score stayed at 1-0 until the seventh, when Myrtle Beach finally got one across the plate. Geuri Lubo belted a one-out solo homer, tying the game up 1-1. Then, in the eighth, the Pelicans took their first lead of the evening on one-out RBI single from Logan Poteet. After trailing for the first six innings of the ballgame, Myrtle Beach would be taking a 2-1 lead into the top of the ninth.
But the wheels fell off for them in the final frame. The Green Jackets put up a four-spot off Jhon Rosario in the ninth on two RBI singles and an RBI double, turning a 2-1 deficit into a 5-2 lead. In the bottom of the ninth, the Pelicans went down in order and officially fell 5-2.
