2026 Jack Pettinger Invitational

May 29-31, 2026 Madison, WI LCM Results

It was a good meet for Maggie Wanezek in her home pool at the annual Jack Pettinger Invitational.

A rising junior at Wisconsin, Wanezek claimed three victories during the annual Jack Pettinger Invitational in Madison.

Wanezek, who was the runner-up in both the 100 back and 200 back at the NCAA Championships, won the titles in the 100 back (59.39) and 200 back (2:10.95).

They were short of her personal best teams in each event — 59.14 in the 100 back and 2:09.75 in the 200 back — but were still good enough to win.

Wanezek also won the title in the 100 free with a time of 55.68.

Other notable swims came from:

Wisconsin’s Luukas Vainio, a rising senior with the Badgers, won the men’s 100 free in a swim that had historical significance. Nearly 50 years ago, Madison native Jim Montgomery won the gold medal in the 100 free at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, at the time becoming the first ever to break 50 seconds by producing a time of 49.99. Montgomery was coached in college at Indiana by Jack Pettinger, the man the meet is named after. Competing in Montgomery’s hometown and in his home pool, Vainio won the 100 free in the identical time of Montgomery’s win in Montreal, 49.99. Phoebe Bacon, a two-time Olympian, won the women’s 200 IM in a time of 2:12.31. Lily Van Heel, a rising sophomore at Wisconsin, swam personal best times to finish 2nd in both the 100 back (1:02.35) and 200 back (2:17.78). Abby Carlson, a former Wisconsin swimmer, claimed titles in the women’s 200 free (2:02.61) and 400 free (4:17.33). Caleb Goodavish, a 12-year-old for Verona Area Swim Team, set personal bests in the boys’  50 free (25.83), 100 free (55.54), 200 free (2:02.72), 100 back (1:04.44), 50 fly (28.11) and the 200 IM (2:20.76). In the boys’ 11-12 age group this season, Goodavish is now 1st in the 100 free and 200 free, 2nd in the 50 free, 100 back, 50 fly and 200 IM. His previous best in the 100 free was 57.35 and all-time in the boys’ 11-12 age group, he now ranks 7th in the 100 free, 14th in the 200 free, 32nd in the 50 free, 66th in both the 100 back and 100 fly, 72nd in the 200 IM and 81st in the 400 IM. Dominik Torok, who just finished his senior season at Wisconsin and was an All-American as a junior in the 400 IM and 200 fly, claimed the men’s’ 200 fly (1:59.55), 200 IM (2:02.31) and 400 IM (4:22.65).
