The new 10-part psychological thriller sees Bardem take on the role of convicted killer Cady previously played by Robert Mitchum in the 1962 film and Robert De Niro in Martin Scorsese's 1991 remake, with creator and showrunner Nick Antosca promising a version of the character that honours the past while also offering something new.
"We tried to find something that was exciting to play and to hold for 10 episodes, that didn't have anything to do with what we've already seen on De Niro or Mitchum," he said.
The actor added that Cady's appearance – tattoo-ed, scarred, with striking blue eyes – was partly shaped by his backstory in this version of the tale.
"He has a very horrible wound in his head, and that should be reflected in some way, somehow — in his eyes, maybe. So, yeah, those are the fun elements to play with. It's like a toy that you play with, and then one day it all comes together."
"There was never any question about who we wanted, and there was no other option than Javier Bardem," he said.
"The role of Max Cady is so memorable and so iconic in the pantheon of film culture that it was essential that we have somebody who can embody that menace and bring that gravity, but also do something different."
