ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Less than three weeks of school remain before nearly 200 workers from Monroe School Transportation Inc. get laid off. Transpo Bus Service will be the new contracted company.

Co-owner Damon Mustaca is trying to keep those people employed by offering them jobs with his company. “We’re going to be doing those same very routes, those same very students, in September,” Mustaca said.
After a competitive bidding process for transportation services, Transpo came in first with Monroe in third, according to Mustaca.
News10NBC’s Adelisa Badzic spoke with Mustaca about the transition.
“The city was able to save a lot of money. I think about $2.8 million, that’s what I came up with,” Mustaca said. “So the city is being fiscally responsible. They’re going with a vendor that has 10 years of experience in this community.”
Badzic asked Mustaca why workers were hesitant to speak on camera about their concerns.
“Well I think it puts them in a tough spot. They do still have a current employer and they still have to think about the next three or four weeks until school is out,” Mustaca said.
The Department of Labor met with workers at Monroe School Transportation on Tuesday to help guide them into new jobs. Mustaca set up at a nearby park to give drivers and monitors an opportunity to apply right there and then, all while getting the same route they’ve been running.
“The parents will have the consistency that they’re looking for, but most importantly, the student. A lot of special needs kids we transport,” Mustaca said. “The 20, 30 minutes a day they spend with their driver and monitor is very important to them. And it’s upsetting to them when they see a different face, an unfamiliar face. So what we’re trying to do is just make this consistent for everybody.”
Transpo Bus Services has been in Rochester for almost 10 years and runs more than 200 buses a day throughout the Finger Lakes and Western New York. In September, that number will probably exceed 250 buses a day.
Mustaca said drivers and bus attendants can come over as a team and have the ability to pick and choose the route they currently have. The company also offers training and opportunities for people new to the industry to get a CDL and grow with the company.
