The La Jolla High School girls lacrosse team won the 2026 CIF San Diego Section (CIFSDS) Division I championship, defeating Mt. Carmel 11-10 in the final on May 15. The championship came down to the final seconds and a game-winning goal from Allison Hawthorne.  It was an impressive achievement for the Lady Vikings, who started the season with a 2-3 record before going on a five-game winning streak, which started on March 17 with a dramatic 12-11 victory over Torrey Pines and included a 9-8 nailbiter over Cathedral Catholic on March 23.

The team ended up winning nine of its last 11 matches to finish the regular season at 11-5 and outscored its opponents 64-42 during that span. “This season was really a story of growth,” said head coach Carrie Long. “During the regular season, we had moments where we showed our potential, but we were still learning how to consistently play together and trust one another in big moments.” La Jolla took their hot-streak into the playoffs by dismantling Francis Parker 16-9 in the quarterfinals before defeating Del Norte in the semifinals 12-7. That victory was sweet revenge over Del Norte, which eliminated the Lady Vikings in the 2025 semifinal round. “By the postseason, the girls were playing with a different level of confidence and composure,” Long added. “They really bought into what I had seen in them since the first few weeks of practice, and I think that’s what made the difference during our playoff run.” Long served as an assistant coach last year and has been involved in the sport for the better part of 22 years. Among the standout performers in 2026 were Lily Mebust, who will be continuing to play at a D1 level next year at UC Davis.  Teammates Stella Perez and Samantha Cousino also made a huge impact, making timely contributions, particularly in close matches. “They all showed up to practice, which is where the real work is done. They pushed each other to get better,” said Long. “The final was a very intense game and felt back-and-forth the entire way. Every possession mattered, and both teams competed at a really high level. I was proud of how composed our girls stayed under pressure, especially late in the game.”
