Rajat Patidar in forefront, Andy Flower in background: The man behind RCB’s back-to-back IPL trophies ...Middle East

Everything Andy Flower touches turns to gold. The reputed former cricketer-turned-coach has become a master of his craft, and the trophies are there to show for it. Most won’t know, but Flower is considered the greatest Zimbabwean cricketer of all time, and his international career ended prematurely after he spoke against his country’s Prime Minister’s actions in 2003, resulting in a 20-year exile. We’ll delve into that story for another day, but Flower’s rise as a coach has been astonishing.

Reinventing himself as a coach

In his early coaching career, Flower was believed to be a task master. He had a fallout with Kevin Pietersen, who is a free-spirited individual. His tenure was a great one, as England won their first ICC trophy under him and the Ashes away from home after 24 years. After leaving his job with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) in 2019, Flower took to franchise cricket and never looked back.

In 7 years, Flower has won 6 trophies as head coach. This was a testament to his personality change. In all these years, not even the toughest customers have had issues with Flower. Like many old-school cricketers, he too had the ‘my way or the highway’ approach. But he quickly realised that won’t cut it in franchise cricket. He’s adapted, and the results are for everyone to see.

Why no luck at LSG or PBKS?

Now, Flower stands with two Indian Premier League (IPL) trophies. Before the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), he worked with the Punjab Kings and Lucknow Super Giants. Fascinating, neither of them worked. Yes, he got Lucknow into back-to-back Playoffs, but that didn’t culminate in trophies. So, why did Flower lift 2 titles with RCB but not Lucknow or Punjab?

It’s probably because he has been given a free hand from the RCB management. You see, Lucknow or Punjab are notorious for their upper management, i.e., owners stepping in. These aren’t cricketing minds but businessmen. They won’t give you a free rein and demand answers after one bad match, forget a full season. That hasn’t been the case at RCB.

Starter of RCB’s dynasty

In this regard, the RCB management deserves credit. Flower was onboarded after IPL 2023. In February 2024, Mo Bobat, who has ties with Flower from ECB days, joined as the director of cricket, and Dinesh Karthik, who retired from RCB and IPL, became the new mentor and batting coach after IPL 2024. The management showed faith in Flower, and he assembled a great coaching unit.

In 2024, RCB were 1-7 and then went on a 6-match run to qualify for the Playoffs. That was Flower’s first season with them. It only got better from there. You’ve perhaps seen videos released by RCB where Bobat, Flower and Karthik were planning for the IPL 2025 mega auction. One could see the clarity. They knew what they wanted, the type of batters and bowlers that would work in Bengaluru.

With Flower at the helm, for the first time in the IPL, RCB assembled a great bowling unit with the likes of Josh Hazlewood, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Krunal Pandya. At the request of the franchise, Madhya Pradesh named Rajat Patidar captain in domestic cricket, and 2 years later, he has 2 IPL trophies to his name. Patidar gets the credit, but it was Flower all along. He was the starting point of it all. It’s been his vision, and he’s brought coaches and players along to execute it.

In a time where head coaches become the main player on the team, like Gautam Gambhir for India and Brendon McCullum for England, Flower wants to go under the radar and get the job done. He isn’t the first name you think; in fact, some may not know who he is. But, for the last 7 years, Flower has got it done across the world. Patidar deserved the praise, but Flower needs to be given his flowers as well.
