The Chicago Bears’ 1920 Football Drive series is always a must-watch for me.
And while every episode doesn’t offer up deep dives, there is always a behind-the-scenes element that I appreciate watching. Among the peeks behind the curtain we get in this latest episode is how the Bears went about building their class of undrafted free agent additions.
This clip was fun to watch:
After the draft ends, the true madness begins #1920FootballDr
— Chicago Bears (@ChicagoBears) May 27, 2026These quotes, which were sprinkled throughout the video above, stood out to me because they helped provide a glimpse at what this process is all about:
“For us, we look at the undrafted process as really another free draft pick.” “When the draft ends, it’s like controlled chaos. In the draft process, we’re choosing you. The undrafted free agent proces, they’re choosing us.” “It is madness. Because it’s a lot of negotiating. … Our staff does a really good job of putting in work leading up to undrafted free agency with our coaching staff” “For whatever it is, sometimes kids end up going through the process and don’t get drafted. But for us as scouts, that’s probably one of the most passionate and rewarding parts of this job and you take a little bit of pride when one guy ends up making it.”For the entire 1920 Football Drive episode, you can watch below:
Bears look to supplement 2026 NFL Draft class with UDFA signings
I love that the example of Jahdae Walker was brought into the video above. If you’ll recall, Walker was one of the team’s notable undrafted free agent signings from 2025. Walker was a relatively unheralded prospect coming out of Texas A&M. He averaged a team-leading 16.9 yards per reception as a junior in 2023 and posted three 100-yard receiving games in 2024. In his final year on campus, Walker was named the Aggie Heart winner, which is the highest honor a Texas A&M senior football player can receive.
Walker’s journey began at the back of the depth chart in training camp, but he moved up the pecking order with his play in the preseason. Walker was a healthy scratch early in his pro career, but occasionally chipped in on special teams when he was made active. However, the grunt work and grind paid off in December when he made the biggest catch of his career with a game-tying score against the Green Bay Packers that forced overtime in what was eventually a thriller of a Bears win.

“That’s when your area scouts and your position coaches work together, and we executed really, really well. So when the draft ended, we were able to sign those players to undrafted contracts. And many of those players are going to be in the mix to compete and make our football team.”
With OTAs under way, someone who was a part of this year’s class of undrafted free agents could follow in Walker’s footsteps. And it’s not as if there is a shortage of options. After all, the team reeled in six of the highest-ranked undrafted prospects who weren’t selected in the 2026 NFL Draft. For instance, we could see someone like Beau Gardner win a job as the team’s long snapper. Maybe tight end Hayden Large gets the call. Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson is clearly a fan of the University of Iowa product.
In the end, I look forward to seeing who carves out a role on the 2026 Bears. There is always an underdog story to root for … we just don’t know who it is right now.
