Kiera Johnson was eight months pregnant when she died. Doctors were able to save her baby. News10NBC’s Garrett Chan spoke with Johnson’s sister, Algeria, outside the home, where candles and balloons have been placed to honor her memory.

“Devastating. Shocking. It’s kind of just trying to figure out the next step from now and kind of confusing the way and just how everything happened,” Algeria Johnson said.

Algeria said Kiera was loving and always looked out for her siblings. Her life was centered around her daughter Zhurii, who turned three years old on Monday — just two days after her mother died in the fire.

Algeria said it’s been difficult to explain what happened to Zhurii.

“We do explain to her, her mom is in heaven. And she’s asking like today she called me here and she was like, where is Kiara? Where is my mommy? So she was asking today, and she knows. But at the same time, she don’t understand. So she’s kind of like trying to figure out where’s my mommy,” Algeria said.

Six people were in the burning home, and two were trapped on the second floor. One of those was Kiera.

“From speaking to someone that was in the house with her, she suffered in the smoke instantly. And she did say, she couldn’t breathe and to help me. And then they said that she had disappeared,” Algeria said.

There’s no official word yet on how the fire started, but the family said it may have been caused by an electrical fire in the basement. A third relative was also hurt in the fire.

As the family moves forward, they’re leaning on faith and each other as they raise a baby who will never know her mother.

“Nobody will ever be able to replace my sister, you know, because that was her mother. But it is up to us, as our family, to foreign to her to love for another, to her. Something that my sister would have wanted while she was here,” Algeria said.

The family is naming the baby after Kiera. Algeria has set up a GoFundMe to help cover funeral expenses and necessities. To view the GoFundMe, click here.

News10NBC reached out to the Barnard Fire District and the Monroe County Fire Bureau for an update on the third relative who was hurt and the official cause of the fire.
