Suryakumar Yadav defends ‘poor form’ as BCCI contemplates India’s T20I captaincy change ...Middle East

Suryakumar Yadav’s career is in a freefall. For 2 years now, he’s been the worst T20I batter for India, but since the Men in Blue keep winning, the selectors keep persisting with him. India won the T20 World Cup 2026, not because of him, but despite him. Barring an outstanding Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season, Suryakumar has failed at the highest level time and again.

BCCI considering sacking Suryakumar Yadav

He capped off a poor IPL 2026 season with the Mumbai Indians (MI) earlier today. Every MI batter with at least 10 runs had a better average than him. With the new T20 cycle starting, with the India vs Ireland series in late June, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has reportedly started to discuss Suryakumar’s future.

Shreyas Iyer seems to be the heir apparent. He’s led Punjab Kings to a final already and has been the best middle-order batter in the IPL since 2025. The only issue is that Shreyas isn’t in the T20I team. You can’t just name someone captain when they aren’t even in the side. Therefore, Tilak Varma is also being looked upon as Suryakumar’s replacement.

‘Had a good T20 World Cup,’ says Suryakumar Yadav

But Surya himself doesn’t want to admit that he’s not in great form. In fact, before MI’s last match of the season against the Rajasthan Royals (RR), he even stated that he believes he had a good T20 World Cup campaign. Mind you, he had the lowest strike rate for any Indian batter with 25 runs.

“I’ve worked hard throughout the (IPL) season. I worked hard at the start of the year as well. In the New Zealand series, I won the Player of the Series award. Then I had a good (T20) World Cup, at least according to me. Then came the IPL. I didn’t score runs in the IPL, but I never stopped working hard.”

“I don’t want to say much about that (criticism) because it’s not in my control. These are all uncontrollable factors, and I don’t pay too much attention to them. I try to focus on what is in my hands. At the end of the day, performance is never guaranteed. What is in your control is hard work. So, I keep working hard and try to put my best foot forward. If success comes, that’s great. If it doesn’t, that’s okay too. We’ll go back to the drawing board and work hard again. God is watching. Sooner or later, the rewards will come,” Suryakumar said while speaking to broadcasters ahead of the MI vs RR match.

Lashes out at wrist injury speculators

The Indian T20I captain also lashed out at critics who believe he’s struggling because of a wrist injury. Since last year, many have reported that Suryakumar has a wrist injury, but neither he nor the BCCI has stated so. During the MI vs RR match, even the commentators were talking about it, and he’s taken offence to that.

“First of all, I’d like to clear the air a little bit. The people talking about a wrist injury are either pure physios or people who don’t understand cricket. Because if I really had a wrist injury or such a problem, then the shots I’ve been playing in practice and in matches, especially my flick shots, which are completely wrist-based and depend on hand-eye coordination, I wouldn’t have been able to play those shots,” Suryakumar added.
