Jasprit Bumrah rested for Mumbai Indians’ last IPL 2026 match, but is it too late? ...Middle East

Jasprit Bumrah has been rested for the Mumbai Indians’ (MI) final match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. The world’s best T20 bowler has lost his pace, bowled way too many no-balls, and has looked jaded in general. His bowling has lacked that ‘zip’. His ball isn’t zipping through the surface.

It has been clear to all well-wishers of Bumrah that he needs rest. But MI didn’t care for it. After colourless performances in the early stages, MI head coach Mahela Jayawardene revealed that Bumrah was carrying a niggle and playing through it. The news was shocking and infuriating.

Without a shadow of a doubt, Bumrah is the biggest asset to Indian cricket. Yet, he was allowed to play when he wasn’t 100%. He’s missed World Cups, which has cost India. But the BCCI was sleeping behind the wheel. Or so we thought. It turns out that the board has handed all the power to the franchises over players during the IPL. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia said so himself.

Jasprit Bumrah played IPL 2026 with injury

On May 23, the eve of the MI vs the Rajasthan Royals (RR) match, Jayawardene dropped the bombshell that Bumrah was carrying a niggle in the T20 World Cup 2026. Considering the difference in his bowling, one can’t be certain whether the former Sri Lankan captain is correct or not. Jayawardene explained that the drop in pace was the effect of the niggle, but after about two weeks, Bumrah was near his best in the remainder of the tournament.

“(It is due to) a combination of a few things. Coming back from the (T20) World Cup, he had a slight niggle, which he played with through the World Cup, so we gave him adequate rest to come back. (In) the first 4-5 games, it was a gradual build-up for him to get over that niggle he had. You could see the pace was dropped because of that, and now he’s back to his pace. The last 4-5 games have been good. But obviously, when you’re going through something like that, you do lose a little bit of sharpness of execution and all that because you’re fighting something else. But I think health-wise, it’s 100 per cent (but it is) unfortunate that the season is (now) over for us,” Jayawardene told reporters in Mumbai.

Mismanagement by Mumbai Indians

MI’s decision looks worse with every passing day. They were knocked out of IPL 2026 on May 10. It was after their 11th match of the season. It wasn’t as if Bumrah was helping them win. He took 4 wickets in 13 matches. His economy was on the higher side, 8.36, as per his standards.

It would’ve done Bumrah and MI a world of good if he had been rested and rotated in the initial phase. That way, Corbin Bosch could’ve been tried earlier, and Mumbai might have been alive in the latter stages. But they didn’t do that. But it’s the BCCI that deserves even more scathing criticism.

BCCI caught sleeping behind the wheel

The ODI World Cup 2027 is the next goal. You need Bumrah for that. Mind you, the ace pacer hasn’t played a 50-over match since November 19, 2023. It would’ve been best to ease him into the format against a slightly weaker opposition like Afghanistan.

But because Mumbai kept on playing him, even when they were eliminated, the BCCI has to rest him against the Afghans. It’s clear where the board’s allegiances lie. For all the talk about prioritising Indian cricket, all they care about is money. IPL is their biggest cash cow, and to please the owners, they are willing to risk Bumrah getting injured.
