Tennessee sweeps Georgia, books return trip to Women’s College World Series ...Middle East

News by : (SATURDAY DOWN SOUTH) -

Tennessee is heading back to Oklahoma City, turning back an SEC rival in the process.

The seventh-seeded Volunteers completed a 2-0 sweep of Georgia late Friday afternoon in the Knoxville Super Regional, thrilling their home fans by nailing down consecutive trips to the Women’s College World Series for the first time in 13 years.

It was another close call in Game 2 on Friday, as Tennessee outlasted Georgia, 2-1, to eliminate the Bulldogs after it began the All-SEC Super Regional with a 3-1 victory in Game 1 on Thursday.

The Vols (47-10) could open the WCWS against another SEC team, with Tennessee set to face the winner of this weekend’s super regional between No. 2 seed Texas and Arizona State. But before they could think about another shot at glory in Oklahoma City, the Volunteers had to get past 10th-seeded Georgia, which finished its season at 41-20.

Tennessee will be heading to the Women’s College World Series for the 10th time in program history and the third time in the past 4 seasons.

The Vols can thank junior pitcher Sage Mardjetko for their latest trip to Oklahoma City. She entered Friday’s game in the second inning and was stellar, going 5.2 frames while striking out 9 Bulldog batters. Mardjetko allowed 1 earned run on 2 hits, walking 2 hitters.

While she held down the fort on the mound, it was Sophia Knight who provided the heroics at the plate. Knight gave Tennessee the lead for good after belting a 2-run homer in the second inning. It was only Knight’s second home run of the season, but she’s made them both count, homering in each of the 2 super regional wins.

Tennessee hadn’t made consecutive trips to the Women’s College World Series since 2012 and 2013. After falling just short in Oklahoma City last season, the Vols will get another shot to take home the ultimate prize for the first time in program history. Tennessee was the runner-up in 2007 and 2013.

Georgia had one last gasp in the bottom of the seventh inning, scoring its only run of the game on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to 2-1.

But the Dawgs couldn’t muster up that tying run, and moments later it was the rival Volunteers celebrating like crazy.
