Colombian freestyle/butterfly specialist Sophia Richard has announced her commitment to Southern Methodist University as a part of the Mustang women’s 2027 recruiting class.
Richard wrote the following regarding her commitment:
I’m so blessed to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at Southern Methodist University! I would like to thank God for His constant guidance, and my family, especially my parents, for their endless support and love. I also want to thank Coach Laura, Coach Ross, Coach Mike, Coach Matt, and Coach Eric for their dedication in helping me succeed both in and out of the pool. A special thank you to Coach Ozzie and the SMU coaching staff for believing in me and giving me this amazing opportunity. Pony Up!
Stateside, Richard Sanchez represents Swim Streamline at Northampton in Spring, Texas, and has previously represented the Woodlands Swim Team in Woodlands for years prior.. She swam both of her best short-course butterfly times at the Gulf Senior Champs this past December. There, she won each of events, highlighted by a 55.48 in the 100 fly in prelims, which stands as her best yards time. She also clocked a 2:00.47 in the 200 fly.
Her fastest freestyle times came in March of 2025, at the Aggie Invitational. She finished runner-up in both the 100 free in a career best 51.90 and the 200 free (1:53.91).
In addition to her fly-and-free ability, Richard Sanchez also has some skill in IM races, boasting a best 200 IM time of 2:07.94 and a 400 IM best of 4:33.91.

Based on Richard’s best times, she would have finished 27th in the 200 fly, 52nd in the 100 fly, and 66th in both the 100 and 200 freestyles.
Her 200 fly was just outside of an alternate spot at ACCs, which is a very hopeful sign from a swimmer who is still well out from her collegiate competing days.
The SMU women did pull together 13 points in the 200 fly at ACCs, but also failed to score in the 100 fly. The freestyle was a similar story: the Mustang women scored 13 points in the 100 free and only 4 in the 100 free. This addition addresses some low-scoring needs, though it will be some time before she is able to make her mark.
Her freestyle range is solid and should be a useful tool to accompany any needs that the SMU team requires of her. Her IM is still a bit outside the scoring range, but with college training, that could also be an avenue for her with the Mustangs.
Richard joins Annabelle Nawrocki, Morgan Farmer, and Molly Barnes as the lone publicized recruits in the 2027 recruiting class for SMU.
