Do the Right Thing: Violet called for help when her sister had seizures

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Violet Taylor, a seventh grader in Rush-Henrietta, is being honored for helping her sister during a medical emergency.

She’s among this year’s recipients of the Do the Right Thing awards. The 911 dispatcher who took Violet’s call nominated her. Violet called 911 in January after her 7-year-old sister was suffering from multiple seizures. The dispatcher said Violet remained calm and provided all the needed details to get her sister the proper care.

Violet’s teacher describes her as a role model and a natural leader. We asked Violet what made her so brave during such a scary situation.

“I think I learned it from my mom, because she teaches me all that kind of stuff and she teaches me how to do the right thing and how to just be calm,” she said.

Any student in grades K-12 in a Monroe County school is eligible for a nomination. The good deed must have occurred within one year of the nomination. Anyone over 18 years of age can submit a nomination form, including family, friends, school staff, and coaches.

The Rochester Police Department has held the Do the Right Thing awards since 1995. You can learn more about nominating a student here.
