According to Variety, Jagger will costar in the film alongside Dakota Johnson, Josh O’Connor, Saoirse Ronan, Oscar-winner Jessie Buckley and Isabella Rossellini. The magazine reported that the rocker flew to the island of Stromboli off the coast of Sicily this week where the film is shooting.

The author’s description of the book explains, “Ophile, Clothilde and Bettine are sisters who live together in a large house by the sea. One night their neighbor, the Lighthouse Keeper, is killed by lightning during a terrible storm. His son, Paris, returns to take his father’s place at the lighthouse. Ophile and Bettine fall in love with Paris, and he returns Bettine’s affections. Terrible rivalries ensue. A peculiar baby is born. Havoc and revenge result. Eventually some people die and others are reconciled.”

In the note, Niffenegger (The Time Traveler’s Wife) said she used to always describe it as a “silent film melodrama told in Japanese prints,” in reference to the book that originated as a limited-edition artist’s book created by the author between 1985 and 1998, made up of 80 aquatint etchings on Japanese Sakamoto paper and letterpress text bound in calf leather.

The movie will be two-time Cannes winner Rohrwacher’s first English-language feature. While details about the film’s plot have not yet been revealed, unconfirmed Italian press reports claim that Jagger will plays the doomed lighthouse keeper, whose son is played by O’Connor (The Crown).

It marks a return to the big screen for Jagger, who has dabbled in acting for the past 50-plus years, beginning with his starring role in the 1970 drama Ned Kelly. He followed that up with that year’s Nicolas Roeg-directed British crime drama Performance, in which he played to character as a reclusive rock star. He continued his sporadic dramatic roles over the next three decades with supporting roles in the sci-fi adventure Freejack (1992), 1997’s Nazi drama Bent, as well as 2001’s Enigma and The Man From Elysian Fields, 2008’s The Bank Clerk and 2019’s The Burnt Orange Heresy.

The Stones announced this month that their new 14-track studio album, Foreign Tongues, will drop on July 10 as the follow-up to their Grammy-winning 24th studio album, 2023’s Hackney Diamonds. So far, the band has released the lead single, “In the Stars,” as well as the opening song, “Rough and Twisted” from the star-studded LP featuring The Cure frontman Robert Smith, Paul McCartney, Steve Winwood and Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith.
