Darren Bailey apologizes to Chicago residents for calling city ‘hellhole' ...Middle East

News by : (NBC Chicago) -

Republican gubernatorial candidate Darren Bailey has made it a point to change his rhetoric toward Chicago in his campaign, and he took another step in that direction Wednesday.

Bailey, who said he has moved to the city again ahead of the November election, spoke before the Chicago City Council and offered an apology for his past comments about the city, including calling Chicago a “hellhole” during the run-up to his 2022 campaign.

“I owe you something: I owe you an apology,” he said. “I said some things about Chicago that were wrong. What I meant was that the political class is failing us, and I should have been more clear, and I wasn’t. So I apologize.”

He continued to say that he wanted to focus his campaign on affordability, public safety and education, and that he wanted to work with Chicagoans toward those goals.

“I want to work with this city. I want to work with you and make this state better, so please share your ideas, frustrations, and concerns,” he said.

While Bailey has sought to moderate his message from his 2022 campaign, Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker has repeatedly brought up his opponent’s connections to President Donald Trump, who endorsed him during the 2022 race.

When asked on Tuesday at the White House whether he endorsed Bailey again, Trump criticized Pritzker and said he “liked” Bailey, but didn’t explicitly offer his endorsement.

“Whatever he decides to do, he will decide to do but to. I’m here for the people of Illinois,” Bailey said.

Pritzker still sought to continue to link the two Republicans in remarks this week.

“I know Darren Bailey and Donald Trump are BFF’s,” he said. “And so that’s what Donald Trump is reflecting. They really are close. And I think it’s sad that Darren Bailey is unwilling and unable to stand up and criticize the president’s war in Iran.”

Pritzker criticized the war, and said that a real focus on affordability would involve resolving a conflict he’s called a mistake.

“It’s causing affordability to go down. It’s causing gas prices to have gone up more than $1.50. That’s what Darren Bailey is all for when he embraces Donald Trump,” he said.

Bailey says he sees the affordability issue differently, and says voters have been adamant they want their concerns addressed.

“People bringing me their property, tax bills and showing me that literally, their property taxes are higher than their mortgage payments,” he said.
