There’s something to be said about the start of summer. Textbooks are closed and the pool is open! The days are longer, and so are the lanes. Your morning alarm is set for your first practice rather than first period. And the sound of the starter’s signal indicates not just the start of a race, but the start of a fresh season, with new goals, new dreams and endless possibilities.

When the Gulliver Raiders Swim Club rolled out the welcome mat for about 400 competitors from 8 local teams, it was everything a summer meet should be. There were fast swims, lifetime bests, and some subtle signs of a sizzling season ahead. Summer energy was everywhere on deck, as kids as young as five stepped up to the blocks, along with seasoned college swimmers, and every age and stage in between.

Standouts and Storylines:

SoFlo Shows Up! South Florida Aquatic Club packed the pool deck and the heat sheet, bringing more than 120 swimmers, ranging in age from 7 to 17.

When it “Reigns” it Pours! Ten-year-old Reign Belzer, of Florida Atlantic Aquatics, hit the wall first in four events, winning the Girls 10 & Under 50 free in a best time of 32.18, the 50 back in 37.67, 50 fly in 34.88, and the 200 IM in 2:51.58.

Who’s Hot? Jianna Amores, 15, of the South Florida Stallions, clocked a cool 1:00.50 in the 100 butterfly, just off her lifetime best of 1:00.12. She also claimed first in her other 4 races, winning the 15-16 Girls 200 free in a best time of 2:08.95, along with the 50 free, 27.54, 200 IM, 2:28.32, and a lifetime best in 100 breast, 1:19.18

Her teammate, Florida State-bound Anthony Pineiro, also had a strong showing, with wins in the boys’ 100 back (58.56), 100 fly (58.03), and 200 back (2:08.87). Pineiro swam a lifetime best in the 100 breast, which was good enough for third place, behind Gulliver Swim Club’s Oliver Cannings (1:08.20) and Florida Atlantic Aquatics’ Matthew Hand (1:08.94). Hand, who swims collegiately at Florida Atlantic University, made his senior international debut representing Ireland at the European Short Course Championships last December.

The University of Miami’s Marissa Inouye, 20, representing Hurricane Aquatics, won both of her events in dominant fashion, claiming the 400 free in 4:18.87 and the 200 free in 2:04.69.

Representing Florida Atlantic Aquatics, New Zealander Talitha McEwan, 20, who swims collegiately at Florida Atlantic University, posted strong results in the Women’s 50, 100, 200 and 400 freestyle events. Her teammate James Shevchenko, 20, placed first in the men’s 400 free, 200 free, 100 free and 200 fly.

The Next Wave!

Ivar Kostowicz, 13, of Gulliver Raiders Swim Club, swam personal best times in 8 out of 8 events. Sebas Hosein, 12, of Gulliver Raiders Swim Club, swam personal bests in all 7 of his events. Sasha Zhou, 10, of South Florida Aquatic Club, swam personal best times in 7 out of 7 events. Judah Callaway Coy, 8, of South Florida Aquatic Club, won all 7 of his events in the Boys 10 & Under category. He also achieved 5 personal best times. Parker Melin, 5, of Swim Fort Lauderdale, was the youngest competitor in the meet, placing 14th in the Girls 10 & Under 50 free, in 1:04.92, and 16th in the Girls 10 & Under 50 back in 1:30.26.  (And if she becomes a star one day, you can remember that you saw her name here first!)

Don’t Stop ’Til You Drop! What a difference a year can make. Up and down the scoreboard, swimmers were posting improvements, some even double-digits below their previous marks. A few of the biggest time drops were:

Juliana Hidalgo Robina, 10, of Hurricane Aquatics, dropped 47.82 in the girls’ 10 & Under 200 IM Alli Ciovacco, 12, of Swim Fort Lauderdale, dropped 32.58 seconds in the girls’ 11-12 200 IM and 27.49 in the 200 free Didia Miccolis, 15, South Florida Aquatic Club, dropped 25.48 seconds in the 15-16 girls 400 IM Oliver Catala, 10, Gulliver Raiders Swim Club, dropped 24.26 seconds in the boys 10 & Under 200 IM Victoria Colmenares, 12, of South Florida Aquatic Club, dropped 24.15 seconds in the girls’ 11-12 200 breast Valentina Pino, 10, Gulliver Raiders Swim Club, dropped 23.80 seconds in the girls’ 10 & Under 200 IM Sofiia Yankevych, 11, of Swim Fort Lauderdale, dropped 21.06 seconds in the girls’ 11-12 400 free Anastasia Morales, 12, of Eagle Aquatics, dropped 17.19 seconds in the girls’ 11-12 200 back Daniel Vaskovtsev, 12, Florida Atlantic Aquatics, dropped 16.76 seconds in the boys’ 11-12 400 free Alexia Domenech, 11, of Gulliver Raiders Swim Club, dropped 16.05 seconds in the girls’ 11-12 400 IM
