India’s amateurish performance sees England win series 0-3, Shreyas Iyer & Gautam Gambhir under scanner ...Middle East

It was professionals versus schoolboys in Bristol. Two multiple-time T20 World Cup champions were facing off. But it never looked like that. There was no match at the County Ground on July 9; it was a mismatch. India wasn’t playing England; they were playing catch-up the entire time.

Amateurish batting

3 overs in, India was behind in the game. In fact, at no point could one say England wouldn’t win. Jofra Archer showed everyone that he’s got Vaibhav Sooryavanshi figured out. That he has trouble against back-of-the-length and short deliveries on pitches with enough pace and bounce.

But Sooryavanshi wasn’t the only one. Ishan Kishan, who’s averaged 13.17 during the UK tour, was found out as well. Like his 15-year-old teammate, the wicket-keeper batter just wanted to move his left foot aside and whack the ball. No need to account for the pace or bounce.

You can’t simply hit through the line. You need horizontal shots on surfaces like the ones England have. Tilak Varma and Washington Sundar were bounced out as well. That’s four out of the seven wickets that fell that can’t play bouncers well enough. Remember, Australia and South Africa offer even more bounce. How will they succeed there?

Shreyas Iyer, the only standout

It was Shreyas Iyer or nothing in Bristol. He saved India’s face. Without his contribution, the Men in Blue scored 78 runs in 10.5 overs. If not for Shreyas, India wouldn’t have scored even 158. A total that was chased in just 13.5 overs by England. Yes, it was that easy for Harry Brook and Phil Salt.

Lots of no balls

But the bowlers weren’t much better. Arshdeep Singh and Prasidh Krishna started well before Prince Yadav’s first over went sideways due to a front-foot no-ball. Prasidh did the same in the fourth over. From 7/0 in 2 overs, England ended the powerplay with 62/1 in 6 overs. 55 runs were scored in the last 24 balls. The game was done and dusted there.

But the embarrassment that followed was much worse. Shreyas had already bowled out two overs each of the three pacers as he hunted for wickets. He had to bring on the spinners. Axar started well, but Washington Sundar was taken to the cleaners. Some of it wasn’t his fault. He hadn’t played in 2 weeks and was bowling at two right-handers, but to go for 19 runs isn’t nothing.

Questionable selections

That target was never defendable, but you can control the controllables, like not bowling no-balls or misfielding. One must question why Sundar even came into the team, considering that Varun Chakaravarthy, an out-and-out spinner, was out with an injury. If anything, Ravi Bishnoi shouldn’t come in for him, irrespective of his woeful performance in Manchester.

If Prince and Prasidh both bowl 2 overs each in the powerplay, there’s no way you’ll take wickets in the middle overs. Axar or Sundar are run containers, not wicket-takers. Without Varun, Harshit Rana or Bishnoi, you can’t dictate in that phase. Selection must be questioned, but the batting performance has been atrocious, just like Shreyas described India’s performance in Nottingham.
