Skanska lands four contracts worth $1.4bn in Sweden and the US ...Middle East

News by : (GCR) -
Skanska has won four contracts, two in Sweden and two in the US, together worth over $1.4bn.

It signed a $1bn design and build contract with the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) to replace an existing 1930s bascule rail bridge and additional related work across Boston, Cambridge and Somerville.

Project scope includes construction of a control facility and platform at Boston’s North Station, plus integrated track and signal upgrades.

The bridge spanning the Charles River will be expanded from from four to six tracks, with disruption to the 100,000 daily riders on the MBTA’s north-side network kept to a minimum.

Work is scheduled to begin imminently and be completed in the autumn of 2032.

New Jersey computer science centre

Skanska also signed a $305m contract to build a computer science centre at an unnamed university in New Jersey.

The six floor, 12,200-sq-m structure will be made from structural steel and mass timber and contain classrooms, offices and labs.

Skanska will also renovate 9,300 sq m of offices and conference rooms over seven floors of an existing hall.

Construction began in March 2026 and is due to be completed in the first quarter of 2030.

Stadium in Malmö

In Sweden, the company has signed a $105m contract with the city of Malmö to begin the second phase of a new football and athletics facility.

The athletics and football stadium (pictured) will be able to accommodate 8,000 fans and involves running and jumping tracks, a javelin area, changing rooms, media space, storage areas and catering facilities.

Skanska has previously worked on the project’s first phase, which included development of the new facility and the demolition of the existing stadium. It is due to be completed between 2028 and 2029.

Prison in Strömsund

Skanska has also won a $60m contract to build a prison for 140 inmates in the central Swedish municipality of Strömsund.

The facility will be leased to the Swedish Prison and Probation Service and is based on a former commercial site.

Skanska has already undertaken demolition work, with the correctional institution becoming a Class 3 facility, Sweden’s lowest security class for prisoners.

The prison is due to be completed in 2028.
