Littwin: Trump dumps Boebert, Bennet dumps Polis as the Colorado political world continues to churn ...Middle East

News by : (Colorado Sun) -

I was planning to write about Donald Trump’s social media tirade against MAGA stalwart and longtime Trump ally Lauren Boebert — inviting someone, anyone, to run against her in the 4th CD primary — for the crime of campaigning for Trump nemesis Rep. Thomas Massie in the Kentucky GOP primary. You know, the guy Trump has called “the Worst Republican Congressman in the History of Our Country.”

In a post on Truth Social, Trump called  Boebert “weak-minded,” “dumb,” “foolish” and “A Carpetbagger indeed!”  He then added, in the Trumpian style we’ve come to expect, if not exactly respect:  “Even though I long ago endorsed Boebert, if the right person came along, it would be my Honor to withdraw that Endorsement, and endorse a good and proper alternative. Just let me know, or announce your Candidacy, and I will be there for you!”

Trump’s threat to recruit a candidate to unseat Massie paid dividends when Ed Gallrein, the handpicked former Navy SEAL, won the primary Tuesday night. Could the same happen to Boebert?

And yet, threatening to pull his endorsement of Boebert — who has been with Trump since the golden escalator ride — would seem to be as empty as a threat could be, given that the deadline for filing for the June 30 Colorado primaries has ended. You wouldn’t expect Trump to know this, of course, because it’s not like he has hundreds of people working for him who could have told him.

But let’s see what happens if a Trump-approved independent runs as a write-in candidate in the 4th Congressional District general election. Would Trump actually risk giving a Democrat a chance to win the seat out of pure pettiness? What do you think?

What we do know is that for Trump, loyalty is a one-way street — with a great pileup at his door of former Trump supplicants to prove it. And that no matter how loyal a follower you might be, he’ll turn on you in a Mar-a-Lago minute if you are bold/foolish enough to cross him.

But, just as I was preparing to put virtual pen to virtual paper to write about Boebert, Michael Bennet dropped the big one on CNN, saying that if he were elected governor, he would definitely not appoint Jared Polis to take his place in the Senate. To which I can only reply, I should hope the hell not.

According to Bennet, Polis called him a few days ago to ask not to be considered for the job, proving the point that even a governor knows which way the wind blows.

Bennet told CNN’s Kaitlin Collins that Polis’ “terrible” commutation of election grifter Tina Peters was “disqualifying,” as the fallout against Polis — should Dems in the state legislature censure him? — continues.

So, what’s a poor columnist to do?

After much consideration — OK,  it took me maybe a minute — I decided to write about both.

The connection here — the misuse of executive power — is too great to resist. I’m not saying Polis is remotely close to Trump’s league, but you could see the arrogance clearly in both cases.

And in case you missed some of the nuances — such as Polis’ insistence that Peters’ conviction had nothing to do with the 2020 election — you should take a look at a devastating CNN fact-check of Polis’ “misleading” rationales for reducing Peters’ sentence.

As I wrote in my last column, Polis’ decision, which allows Peters to leave prison on June 1, having served only 17 months of her nine-year-sentence, would be remembered as Polis’ political obituary.

But I didn’t expect the evidence to be this stark this soon.

Bennet has taken heat from some in the Phil Weiser camp — AG Weiser, of course, is Bennet’s opponent in the Dem primary to succeed Polis — because Bennet said, if elected governor, he would appoint his own successor in the Senate. Would you rather that Polis did the appointing?

Weiser and Bennet have both condemned Polis’ decision on Peters in no uncertain terms. But if Weiser wins, Bennet would presumably stay in the Senate and Weiser would have no decision to make on a successor. If Bennet wins, he could have picked Polis to succeed him. But now, coming out against Polis — and for good reason — is the preferred political position to take.

I don’t know how real the censure-Polis movement is. But I know where it could lead.

And I don’t know how real Trump’s threat is against Boebert, but I know where that could lead, too.

Marjorie Taylor Greene, another former Trump supplicant since exiled from MAGA world, said Trump’s outburst is less about Massie and more about Trump’s links to Jeffrey Epstein.

Greene tweeted: “There were only 4 of us, Republicans, that signed the discharge petition to force the vote to release the Epstein files.

“Thomas Massie, Nancy Mace, Lauren Boebert, and myself.

“Trump has come after us one by one ever since then.”

As you might know, I’m not exactly a Boebert fan. My criticism of her over the years has been hardly more measured than Trump’s. And I don’t quite know what to think of Boebert’s reply to Trump.

She tweeted: “Yes, I saw the President’s post. No, I’m not mad or offended. I knew the risks when I agreed to stand by my friend Thomas Massie. I was, and will be, America First, America Always, and MAGA.”

She’s not mad or offended? Why not? I guess maybe for the same reason that Ted Cruz is a Trump supplicant even though Trump once linked Cruz’s father to Lee Harvey Oswald. I guess maybe for the same reason that Marco Rubio has sold his soul to Trump even though Trump once said of Little Marco, “Marco Rubio is a total lightweight who I wouldn’t hire to run one of my smaller companies — a highly overrated politician!”

But the key point in Boebert’s tweet was that she said she “knew the risks.” Yes, she knew well the possibility — we might call it a certainty — that Trump would add her to his vengeance hit list for campaigning for Massie.

I’m waiting to see how Boebert actually responds. Say, to the $1.8 billion Treasury Department slush fund that the Justice Department gave to Trump — in a settlement of a $10 billion Trump lawsuit against the IRS — to reward those who have been, uh, victimized by so-called government weaponization.

You know, like the January 6 insurrectionists. You’d think that the blanket pardons Trump gave even the most violent of the offenders would be enough. But no. Now he wants to give them taxpayer money as so-called victims. And just in case anyone thinks that this is not a slush fund to use as Trump determines, the funding is scheduled to end on Dec. 15, 2028.

And it gets even worse, Trump’s Justice Department on Tuesday expanded the agreement with Trump to bar the IRS  from pursuing tax claims against the president, his family or his businesses.

Is that corrupt enough for you? Is that lawless enough for you?

I want to see where Boebert, a self-described protector of taxpayers’ money, comes down on this.

Boebert finally admitted that Trump’s veto of her unanimously passed bill that would have brought clean water to 50,000 southeast Colorado residents was revenge against Colorado for keeping Tina Peters in prison.

Could she do something similar now, with her eyes open, to identify the DOJ deal with Trump as a slush fund for a corrupt president to dole out to his friends and with which to protect himself and his family?

If she were so bold, I’d make my own deal with Boebert. I’d vow to never call her a carpetbagging canoodler again.
