Britain’s diplomatic team in the United States has suffered a further setback, following the sacking of deputy ambassador James Roscoe.
It comes only months after Peter Mandelson was sacked as ambassador in Washington over his links to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
The Telegraph reported that embassy staff in Washington were told that Roscoe, the deputy head of mission, had been removed from his post “with immediate effect” in a one-line email, without providing any other details.
Diplomats will reportedly be gathered and informed of the reason for Roscoe’s departure on Wednesday.

He has had a long career in government and diplomacy – he served as part of the UK mission to the United Nations between 2009 and 2012, at the British High Commission in Freetown, Sierra Leone, and as part of the Coalition Provisional Authority in Basra following the 2003 Iraq war.
Following that, he became chief press officer to two prime ministers – Tony Blair and Gordon Brown – between 2006 and 2009 before leaving to become communications secretary to Queen Elizabeth II from 2013 to 2016.
Between 2016 and 2019 he worked at the Cabinet Office and the Department for Exiting the European Union, before being appointed the UK’s ambassador to the UN.
He served there until July 2022, when he became deputy ambassador to Washington.

The Telegraph reports that during his time working for the late Queen, he was described as a “consummate insider for the royals.” Former colleagues also called him “unflappable”.
With his royal background, Roscoe played a big role in the King’s state visit to the United States in April, and praised the monarch in an interview at the time on CNN.
“The King … can draw out those things that really pull us together,” he said, paying tribute to the “incredible” defence and economic partnerships that “bind the US and UK.”
Outside of politics, he is married to Clemency Burton-Hill, a violinist and author who has presented the Proms and the Breakfast programme on BBC Radio 3.
