One of Chicago’s most well-known animal shelters took in dozens of dogs that were among roughly 76 rescued from a suburban home where they were living in filthy, hoarder-like conditions, the shelter said on Saturday.
The dogs arrived late Friday night after Anti-Cruelty was called in to help with the large number of dogs that were removed this week from a now-condemned home in Lemont, the shelter said in a social media post.
Pictures of the inside of the home on the 800 block of McCarthy Road in Lemont provided to NBC Chicago by local animal rescue Ruby Whiskers shows grime covering the floors and walls and debris littered about. The pictures also show several filthy plastic bins lining one of the walls that appear to have been used as make-shift dog beds.

Many are undersocialized and will need patience and individualized care as they adjust to new surroundings,” the shelter said in the post that also included pictures of some of the dogs.
The dogs were removed after Lemont police officers found them living in crowded and unsafe conditions while executing a search warrant of the property owned by 58-year-old Andrew Malak related to a Firearms Restraining Order, authorities said.

With nearly half of the rescued dogs now in their care, Anti-Cruelty said their team’s focus is now on getting to know the dogs, helping them get settled and assessing what they each need.
As of Saturday morning, the shelter said timelines for when the rescued dogs will be available for adoption were not yet clear.
“This response is a powerful example of what can happen when a community comes together. Animal control agencies across Cook County and neighboring counties, along with shelters and rescues, worked together to help ensure these dogs received the care and support they need,” the shelter said in the post. “We’re grateful to every team that stepped up to help. When animals need us, collaboration makes it possible to do more together than any one organization could do alone.”
