Jacoby Brissett playing dangerous game with Cardinals OTAs absence ...Middle East

Sport by : (Arizona sports) -

Jacoby Brissett stands on business with 10 toes down. He negotiated a $30 million extension from the Indianapolis Colts without an agent. He did the same with his rookie contract after he was drafted by the Patriots with the 91st overall pick.

His motivation?

“I don’t like people to BS on my behalf,” Brissett once told the Indianapolis media. “I try to say it myself … all you can be is honest.”

Brissett was missing from the Arizona Cardinals’ voluntary OTAs on Monday, a sure sign that his honesty is not going over well with owner Michael Bidwill. Otherwise, Brissett would be in attendance out of respect for rookie head coach Mike LaFleur, who is tasked with installing a brand new, world-class offense in Arizona. Brissett is smart veteran who understands the importance of the moment.

He is also playing a dangerous game. He is making it very easy on the Cardinals to send him elsewhere, including the curb, and maybe that’s the point. Unfortunately, he’s also making it easy for football fans in Arizona to turn nasty, forgetful of how good he was in 2025.

Should they choose, the Cardinals have an easy offramp with Brissett. They acquired Gardner Minshew, whose free-spirit personality always wins over the room. They drafted Carson Beck with the 65th pick overall, 26 picks higher than Brissett was selected in 2016. They do not need stacked obstacles in front of their first real swing at a potential franchise quarterback (sorry, Clayton Tune doesn’t count), not when the fans will soon be clamoring for the hotshot rookie.

If the Cardinals are truly focused on player development in 2026 and potential draft status in 2027, Brissett does not belong here. He’ll cost more while complicating the picture. And with all the doom-and-gloom predicted for the Cardinals, which was heightened by a slap-in-the-face schedule release from the NFL, the team is blessed with very low expectations.

But what if the Cardinals’ goal is to shock the world with competence? With tremendous improvement in the trenches and around the margins? What if the team has seen enough spark and competence from LaFleur’s playbook and personality to believe anything is possible in 2026? Then Brissett should get a raise and a real chance to lead a real team.

General Manager Monti Ossenfort is surely feeling some kind of heat. Marvin Harrison Jr. and Darius Robinson have not performed anywhere near expectations. Garrett Williams and Walter Nolen missed Monday’s OTAs and are still recovering from injuries. Josh Sweat was also missing on Monday, previously the subject of trade rumors following the firing of Jonathan Gannon, although any unhappiness may have subsided with the retention of defensive coordinator Nick Rallis.

And in proof of Mack Wilson’s toughness and the team’s general paranoia/lack of transparency, a story from Cardinals writer Darren Urban revealed how the linebacker endured fractured ribs, a punctured lung, was hospitalized for three days with a tube in his chest and slept upright for three weeks after leaving the hospital in the 2025 season. The Cardinals only reported the injured ribs, although that might be all too common in a gladiator sport.

Meanwhile, Calais Campbell preferred a return to Baltimore than another year with the Cardinals, in a season where he’ll be a defensive lineman at age 40. That like watching Randy Johnson win his 300th game with the Giants, especially if Campbell gave up a starting job for a rotational role with the Ravens. It says more than anyone cares to admit.

Point is, Ossenfort has now drafted 35 players in the NFL Draft. And his Cardinals keep falling further behind, teetering on the brink of irrelevance.

There have been injuries, bad luck and plenty of alibis to go around. But if the Cardinals don’t get enormous returns on investment from their young, homegrown players in 2026, you can’t possibly trust him with the No. 1 pick in the 2027 draft. Which makes the Brissett holdout a matter of clarity and urgency, one way or the other.
