Ben Pope at the Chicago Sun-Times jumped on the “Blackhawks need to do something this summer” bandwagon this weekend. But, as he usually does, Ben had an appropriately measured approach to that line of discussion. He notes that Blackhawks general manager Kyle Davidson has been true to his word since taking the job, and he’s said he’s going to explore every opportunity to improve the club this summer. Which is good.
But, as Ben writes (and I’ve said here for more than a year…), it takes two to tango. If the right player never hits the market “it will be simply unfortunate for the Hawks, not reprehensible.” This isn’t an Xbox sim; the Blackhawks can’t force a top-level player to become available as a free agent or via trade. And they can’t force the cost of acquisition to be right for what they’re trying to accomplish.
I liked how Ben closed his column, noting that the NHL’s league-wide reluctance to rebuild should ultimately benefit the Blackhawks based on the volume of assets they’ve collected already — and still own in the coming years.
“It’s worth noting the rest of the league’s stubborn refusal to rebuild, if it holds, should eventually benefit the Hawks, since the age curve eventually comes for everyone. Nobody else is even attempting to build a young core that could rival the Hawks’ or Sharks’ come, say, 2030.”
It's possible no impact players hit the NHL trade market this summer. If that happens, the Blackhawks will be out of luck. But if any do move, Kyle Davidson needs to do everything in his power to ensure the Hawks are the team they move to.New column: t.co/C1lSPuiIR3

— USA Hockey (@usahockey) May 18, 2026 Random Blackhawks Stat of the Day: if I told you four Blackhawks had more than 200 shot attempts at 5-on-5 this season (per Natural Stat Trick), I think most fans would easily guess Connor Bedard led the team. And he did. But the other three that hit the 200 benchmark? Maybe not as easy… especially the guy who ranked second. Connor Bedard: 278 in 1,101:01 Louis Crevier: 232 in 1,157:37 Ryan Donato: 219 in 1,054:16 Tyler Bertuzzi: 204 in 1,142:03 I will note that Nick Lardis tracked at a rate that would have likely put him over that line in his 41 appearances. He averaged 12.65 shot attempts per 60 minutes (93 total shot attempts in 441:04 of ice time). The Toronto Maple Leafs announced assistant general managers Brandon Pridham and Derek Clancey are no longer employed by the organization. Pridham is the father of Blackhawks prospect Jack Pridham and was the Leafs’ salary cap specialist. Finally, Arvid Söderblom was in net for Sweden and earned a 6-2 win on Sunday.
