Two people were killed and another injured in a crash on Saturday that prompted a 5-hour closure on Route 41 in Highland Park, officials said.
A two-vehicle crash occurred around 3:05 p.m. at the intersection of Park Avenue and Route 41 in Highland Park when a driver in a vehicle traveling northbound on Route 41 collided with a vehicle turning left off westbound Park Avenue onto southbound Route 41, city officials said.
Three people were transported to a local hospital where two of them were later pronounced dead.
Both the City of Highland Park Police Department and Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team responded to the scene. Traffic was closed for 5 hours as authorities investigated the crash site until 7:30 p.m.
The closure snarled traffic in the area for hours. Two badly damaged vehicles could be seen in the intersection as authorities investigated, video showed.
Authorities advised people to “please avoid the area” during the closure in a post on social media.
The crash remains under investigation.
