Glen Crossley, 56, the man who is responsible for the death of the Canadian Olympic gold-medalist swimmer Victor Davis in a hit-and-run in 1989, has been charged with his involvement in a multi-million-dollar grandparent scam network, which was said to have defrauded victims out of millions of dollars.
In 1989, Crossley hit Davis outside of a bar in Montreal and was convicted of leaving the scene, leading to jail time. In 2019, he was also convicted of manslaughter after another altercation at a bar, which killed a 70-year-old man.
According to a CBC report, Crossley and six others participated in the “grandparent scam network.” Crossley and the six others have been formally charged and arrested. The US government is asking that they be extradited to the US to “face charges alongside the other 25 Canadians” who have been charged.
Crossley allegedly worked as a “closer” in the scam, posing as an officer or lawyer to persuade victims to give money, after an “opener” initially convinced them that a loved one was in legal trouble.
The overall scam targeted thousands of American victims over three years.
His connection to the Davis case stems back to November 1989, when he and Davis had “exchanged words” at a bar. According to the CBC, Crossley later struck Davis with his car, though he claimed he did not realize that he had hit anybody; the judge in the case found his testimony “unbelievable”. Davis died two days later.
In 1992, Crossley was handed a 10-month sentence for his connection to the Death of Davis.
A post on Instagram by LaProvince Quebecoise detailed the list of the seven Quebec natives arrested.
Seven Quebecers have been arrested and charged with participating in a grandparent-type fraud in the state of Vermont, US authorities announced Friday.
The seven individuals were arrested in Canada the day before, the Vermont Federal District Attorney’s Office said in a statement. They are accused of engaging in a $28 million fraud against seniors, known as the “grandparent fraud,” across more than 41 U.S. states.
The Journal had reported that one of them, Glen Crossley, appeared at the Montreal Courthouse. In fact, the 56-year-old man has been behind bars in the past for killing two people, including an Olympic champion.
“These charges follow a separate indictment of 25 other defendants, including Gareth West,” US authorities said.
The accused indulged in fraud between the summer of 2021 and June 4, 2024 according to the indictment made public Thursday. It would involve telephone calls made to call centres located in Greater Montreal.
According to authorities, they were impersonating family members, often grandchildren. They claimed to be in custody following a car accident and needed money to pay bail. Sometimes they even pretended to be the lawyer of this struggling relative.
If the accused are found guilty, they can face up to 20 years in prison.
Here is the list of the seven Quebecers accused:
Evangelos Lohaitis, aka “Bucky” (36 years old, Saint Eustache)
Mitchell Burnett-Guarna, alias « Juice » (39 ans, Dorval)
Kyle Lesser, aka “Brock” (34, Our Lady of Parrot Island)
Luca Santalucia, aka “Rocco” (27 years old, Montreal)
Glen Crossley, aka “Buju” (56, Kirkland) Cody Jodouin-King, aka “Lids” (28 years old, Vaudreuil-Dorion)
Panagiota Fountotos, aka “Nike” (29 years old, Laval)
In addition to these seven Quebecers, another 25 people were arrested for the same fraud last March.
