Cool. Thanks, Mariners.
First you drop two of three to the Brewers, and then you call up the top pitching prospect in MLB, Kade Anderson, to face the Cubs immediately thereafter. Real nice.
Jeff Passan has the news:
BREAKING: The Seattle Mariners plan to call up left-hander Kade Anderson, the top pitching prospect in baseball, to start Saturday, sources tell ESPN. Anderson, the third pick in the 2025 draft, has a 1.06 ERA over 93.1 innings with 135 strikeouts, 13 walks and 47 hits allowed.
Kade Anderson Starting on Saturday
All of the Mariners’ starting pitchers are good starting pitchers, so the actual difficulty increase here is maybe not as dramatic as I might have made it seem. But still, this kid is a stud. He’s not just the top pitching prospect in baseball; he’s also the 5th-ranked prospect overall according to MLB Pipeline and sixth overall to Baseball America.
As Passan noted above, Anderson has a 1.06 ERA (1.78 FIP) in 18 starts at Double-A this year. That comes alongside a … get this … 40.5% strikeout rate and 3.9% walk rate. Just absurd numbers.
Maybe he’ll have some nerves is about all I can offer you.
As we discussed earlier, David Peterson will start for the Cubs on Saturday, opposite Kade Anderson. Here’s what I had to say about that earlier today:
On Saturday night (6:15 pm start time), David Peterson will make his ninth start in a Cubs uniform (though it’ll actually be his tenth appearance, as he last appeared in relief against the White Sox on August 17). That idea was short-lived, however, as the starter meant to at least temporarily take Peterson’s spot in the rotation, Edward Cabrera, bounced right back to the Injured List with a blister after one start. Probably for the best, as Peterson has also been very good since joining the Cubs … with the exception of just one start against the Cardinals (these pesky Cardinals, man!).
Take out just that ONE game against the Cardinals, and Peterson has a 2.21 ERA over 40.2 IP.
Even more encouraging, Peterson’s groundball rate is up to 55.6% over his last five starts (+ that one relief appearance). For a little reference on just how good that is: The full-season league leader, Cristopher Sanchez, sits at 57.6%.
And don’t forget, watching Saturday night’s Cubs game is a little trickier than usual, as the national FOX broadcast has a conflict with the Bears preseason game. More details on that here.
