The shooting unfolded about 10:35 p.m., police say, as officers responded to a call of a person with a gun in the 8200 block of South Shore Drive.

According to police, officers found a person matching the suspect’s descriptio in the 3100 block of E. 83rd St. and attempted to conduct an investigatory stop.

Officers approached the man and told him to keep his hands visible. An exchange of gunfire followed, with both officers firing their weapons and the suspect struck by gunfire.

Aid was immediately rendered on scene, police said, and an ambulance was called. The man was placed into custody and transported to a nearby hospital, where he was last listed in serious condition.

A firearm was recovered from the scene, police said. The officers, who were not struck by gunfire, were both transported to a nearby hospital for observation.

The circumstances surrounding the incident are being investigated by the Chicago Office of Police Accountability, and both officers will be placed on routine administrative duties for 30 days.
