A 17-year-old Oak Brook teen charged in connection with a deadly crashed that killed an elderly Downers Grove couple was driving more than 100 miles per hour seconds before the crash occurred, prosecutors said.
Francesco Rendina appeared in court on Monday morning on two counts of reckless homicide. During the hearing, a judge denied a request from the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office to detain Rendina ahead of trial.
According to prosecutors, the crash occurred on March 27 near Highland Avenue and 35th Street in Downers Grove. Prosecutors said an investigation determined Rendina was driving a 2022 BMW SUV southbound on Highland Avenue at a high rate of speed, changing lanes recklessly. At some point, he crashed into the victims’ vehicle, which had turned onto Highland Avenue off 35th Street.
The driver, Ried Jacobsen, 72, was pronounced deceased at the scene. His wife, Katherine Jacobsen, was transported to an area hospital, where she died from injuries sustained in the crash.
Prosecutors alleged Rendina was traveling at 104 mph roughly five seconds before the crash and at 89 mph when the impact occurred, which was nearly double the 45-mile-per-hour speed limit.
Rendina’s next court appearance is on June 15.
