The UK’s High Speed Two (HS2) project has appointed a joint venture comprising Taylor Woodrow Infrastructure and Aureos Rail (TWA JV) to deliver the control centre and rolling stock maintenance depot for its high-speed rail upgrade in Birmingham.
The £856m ($1.2bn) contract involves redeveloping 70ha of former industrial land at Washwood Heath, previously occupied by LDV and Metro-Cammell.

Plans for the site include a 30ha depot featuring a rolling stock maintenance building, a carriage wash, an automatic vehicle inspection facility, sidings for train storage and a test track.
The site will also feature the Network Integrated Control Centre (NICC), which is responsible for dispatching trains, driver communication and performance monitoring.
Additional buildings will provide office space and facilities for train cleaners and drivers. The remainder of the land is set aside for commercial purposes, green areas and wildlife habitats.
HS2 area director Steve Cox said: “Once complete, HS2 will transform journeys between Britain’s two largest cities, freeing up space on the existing West Coast Main Line for more freight and local services.
“The new depot and control centre at Washwood Heath will be at the heart of our day-to-day operation and play a crucial role in the testing and commissioning of the railway.”
HS2 expects the Washwood Heath development to create approximately 1,000 permanent jobs on site, along with 500 temporary construction roles.
The announcement comes as Washwood Heath remains one of the UK’s most deprived areas, with around 77% of households experiencing deprivation in at least one category, according to recent census figures.
Construction partner Balfour Beatty VINCI has completed preliminary works at the site, including levelling old industrial structures, decontaminating land, and building a 750m retained cutting for the route into Bromford tunnel.
TWA JV will work with HS2 and the future train operator to finalise designs before commencing construction, testing and commissioning the depot.
HS2 reports ongoing work on viaducts to the west, which will bring trains into the city’s new Curzon Street station.
Teams completed excavation for the 3.5-mile Bromford tunnel last year, and internal works are now under way, the company stated.
The Washwood Heath depot project forms part of broader economic initiatives linked to HS2. A recent study forecasts up to £10bn in economic benefits to the West Midlands over the next decade, coinciding with major HS2 stations and the new depot.
UK Rail Minister Lord Hendy said: “Washwood Heath and the wider HS2 programme will create thousands of jobs across the West Midlands – from the construction teams transforming this former industrial site, to the skilled workforce who will operate this state-of-the-art facility for decades to come.
“HS2 continues to reach major milestones as we work to get the project back on track and unlock its full potential to drive economic growth, jobs and homes across the country.”
The TWA JV and HS2 will collaborate on design completion, construction and the eventual commissioning of the site. The partnership collectively employs over 3,000 people across the UK.
The partners have prior experience in UK and European rail infrastructure, including Kings Cross, Whitechapel and the Elizabeth Line Depot.
In March this year, HS2 started excavation of the last tunnel bore on its 140-mile high-speed rail link between central London and the West Midlands.
