Last week, Chmerkovskiy was suspended from the Dancing with the Stars ballroom for posting a threatening TikTok comment aimed at judge Carrie Ann Inaba after she critiqued his wife Jenna Johnson’s choreography on Super Bowl Night.
“You almost saw Fresh Prince enter the ballroom last night,” Chmerkovskiy wrote, referencing actor Will Smith’s famous onstage altercation with comedian Chris Rock at the 2022 Oscars.
Chmerkovskiy promptly deleted the post and publicly apologized to Inaba.
“In a moment where my instinct was to defend my wife, I made a poor decision to reference a meme to ‘keep my wife’s name’ out of the conversation, without stopping to think through what else that reference could imply, which was genuinely never my intention,” he wrote on his Instagram story, per Entertainment Weekly. “Carrie Ann certainly didn’t deserve to get caught in the middle of my bad judgment, and I hate that she was. The last thing I want is to become a distraction from an important week or from the incredible work my dance partner Jenna Dewan is putting in,” he added.
While some fans think Chmerkovskiy’s return to the Dancing With the Stars ballroom will be “awkward,” his brother Maksim Chmerkovskiy thinks it’s time for everyone to move on.
“I love him, and he’s my brother, and he’s been on the other side of my antics, I guess, in the past, and I think we’re gonna keep it moving,” Maks told E! News on Oct. 22. “He’s gonna handle it.”
