With reports on Friday morning that Roman Kantserov is signing with the Blackhawks, the next order of business for us all to over-focus on is the second contract for the face of the franchise: Connor Bedard. Scott Powers and Shayna Goldman at The Athletic did a deep dive on what that contract could look like. In it, they cite Dom Luszczyszyn’s model, which has Bedard’s value around $14 million.
Obviously term is going to be a big factor; the AAV will go up with the number of years. A really good look here at the entire picture — for Bedard, the Blackhawks and other young players who will need new contracts soon as well.

— Scott Powers (@ByScottPowers) May 8, 2026 Bedard was out there repping the Toronto Tempo on his Instagram story before they played their first WNBA game on Friday. IG: @_connorbedard After learning that Kantserov is indeed coming to Chicago, Scott Powers reported his entry-level deal “is expected to include similar bonuses to a high draft pick.” Kantserov can sign a three-year deal because he doesn’t turn 22 until September. Earlier Saturday morning I wrote about Kantserov officially leaving the KHL being a good start to an important summer for the Blackhawks. But that’s what it needs to be: a start — not the only big addition.Roman Kantserov A Nice Summer-Starting Win for the Blackhawks (But More Needs to Be Done) t.co/WPMYXug2j4
— Bleacher Nation Blackhawks (@BN_Blackhawks) May 9, 2026 Chris Johnston at The Athletic produced his first free agent big board of the offseason. Some good thoughts on an underwhelming class. Rachel Kryshak at ESPN put together a post-lottery mock draft on Friday. After a top three of Gavin McKenna, Chase Reid and Ivar Stenberg, she has the Blackhawks passing on Caleb Malhotra (who she has going fifth to the Rangers) and selecting left-handed defenseman Carson Carels. Here’s part of her rationale:Carels is the type of defender who dictates play from the blue line, controlling the game and playing in every situation. He’s big, physical and gives Chicago a foundational piece on the left side. The potential top pair of Carels-Artyom Levshunov would be a staple in Chicago for years to come. Carels is the best defenseman in my model, but given the teams above Chicago, it feels like they might have the opportunity to draft him — if they do not trade down.
In the OHL playoffs, Kitchener needed overtime to beat Barrie 4-3. Jack Pridham was held without a point but put five shots on net in the game.
How about this goal from Mason West last night for Fargo? It hit the back of the net just 11 seconds after Sioux Falls took a lead early in the second period. Fargo came back to win the game 4-3 in triple overtime! West added an assist and was credited with eight shots on net in the marathon of a game.WHAT A RESPONSE FROM MASON WEST pic.twitter.com/jkXyPGaTkx
— Fargo Force (@FargoForce) May 9, 2026 A good read here from Steven Ellis at Daily Faceoff on what the Vancouver Canucks should do at No. 3 overall in the 2026 NHL Draft. This, of course, has bearing on what the Blackhawks will have available for them at No. 4.The Vancouver Canucks fell in the #NHLDraft order, but they will still have plenty of high-end options to choose from. For @DailyFaceoff: t.co/qjwkqqyaFC @CanucksArmy
— Steven Ellis (@SEllisHockey) May 8, 2026 Reports out of Vancouver are that we might be getting closer to finding out who will ultimately make the Canucks’ decision with the No. 3 pick in the 2026 NHL Draft. The Canucks have started telling candidates that they are no longer in the running for the GM job.Sounds like it is down to Ryan Johnson and Evan Gold.
— Rick Dhaliwal (@DhaliwalSports) May 8, 2026 We got a couple blowouts in the Stanley Cup Playoffs last night. Montreal went into Buffalo and handed the Sabres a stunning 5-1 defeat, tying that series at 1-1 heading to Canada. In the late game, the Vegas Golden Knights also enjoyed a four-goal margin of victory, beating the Ducks 6-2 in Anaheim. Vegas has a 2-1 lead in that series. I’m old enough to remember when Mitch Marner sucked in the playoffs and was personally responsible for the Toronto Maple Leafs being a bad postseason team…A NATURAL HAT TRICK FOR MITCH MARNER!!!
