LPL adds bizarre social media benchmark for overseas cricketers ahead of Lanka Premier League 2026 ...Middle East

The Lanka Premier League (LPL) has come up with one of the most unusual player eligibility rules seen in franchise cricket. Ahead of its sixth season, the Sri Lanka-based league has officially introduced social media popularity as part of the criteria for overseas player categorisation.

LPL 2026: Instagram over cricket?

Traditionally, leagues classify players based on international experience, franchise record, recent form and reputation in T20 cricket. The LPL still considers those parameters, but now there is an additional requirement: followers. Under the latest regulations released by the tournament, overseas players hoping to enter the top-tier Icon category must not only possess elite T20 credentials but also maintain a social media following of over 250,000.

It is weird for a professional cricket league to have this benchmark. Naturally, it has immediately sparked conversations because it denies cricketing merit. Instagram followers can’t win you tournaments. For the Icon category, players need:

At least 75 T20Is More than 100 franchise T20 appearances Minimum 30 matches in the last 18 months More than 250,000 followers on social media

The same social media benchmark applies to the Star category as well.

LPL’s new player criteria is an interesting one.An “Icon” player now apparently needs not just T20 pedigree, but also essentially requires 250K+ social media followers. Even Gold category players are expected to have 150K+ following.Cricketing value should define categories,… t.co/GqLn9SwryF pic.twitter.com/yRsvkASRmP

Commercial appeal now officially part of player value

The LPL regulations make it clear that commercial value is now being treated as an important component in player classification.

The Gold category has slightly relaxed rules, but even there, players need at least 150,000 followers online.

Meanwhile, the Classic category contains perhaps the vaguest wording of all. Alongside cricketing requirements, players are expected to possess a ‘reasonable fan base and commercial appeal.’

The move appears to show how modern franchise leagues increasingly value digital engagement, branding and sponsorship pull. A player with millions of followers can often generate more visibility for teams and broadcasters than a lesser-known cricketer with stronger domestic numbers.

This year, matches will be hosted at four top international venues in Sri Lanka:

R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium, Colombo Pallekele International Cricket Stadium, Pallekele Rangiri Dambulla International Cricket Stadium, Dambulla Sinhalese Sports Club Ground (SSC), Colombo

The SLC said that the online registration portal for foreign players is set to open on May 4, 2026.
