PHOENIX — The Arizona Diamondbacks called up top prospect Ryan Waldschmidt on Friday, and as a pinch hitter in the eighth inning, he recorded his first major league hit.
Waldschmidt came off the bench for designated hitter Adrian Del Castillo to face New York Mets southpaw reliever Brooks Raley. After taking a first-pitch strike, Waldschmidt lined a cutter to left field for a single in his first big league plate appearance.

His parents and brother — who traveled to Phoenix from Louisiana, where Logan Waldschmidt is a pitcher for the University of New Orleans — made it in time to cheer him on.
The Diamondbacks opted to keep Waldschmidt on the bench for his first game to get settled, but in a 1-1 game with a lefty pitching, the opportunity was there to get him a look.
The plan is for Waldschmidt to start in center field on Saturday against the Mets.
Arizona selected Waldschmidt’s contract and designated outfielder Alek Thomas for assignment before Friday’s game.
The Diamondbacks lost the opener to the Mets 3-1 in 10 innings. The offense has scored three runs on 12 hits in its last three games, all losses.
