Shoppers who want the latest in technology have a new place to browse with the opening of Google’s first store in San Diego at Fashion Valley mall.
For Edwin Hunter, 35, of Normal Heights, the store opening presented him with an opportunity to look for a new case for his cell phone and see what else might interest him. Was he going to spend a lot of money in the store?
“Maybe a little bit,” he said, smiling.
Hunter was one of the first customers in line at a store preview Thursday that attracted shoppers and elected officials.
The store is Google’s 10th physical retail store in the nation and its third in California.
Michael Camacho, a Retail Store Lead for Google, said the company chose San Diego because the region has many residents who use Google, the mall attracts a lot of shoppers, and Google has a large staff based in a corporate office here.
“We couldn’t be more proud to have it right here in San Diego,” he said.
The store, on the top level of the mall, near the food court, features Pixel phones and tablets, Nest cameras, Fitbit trackers and more. It also will offer repair services, classes and hands-on training for folks trying to figure out their new tech toys or how to use AI in Google products.

You can do it online, but I think many customers prefer in-person experiences and more than that, when in person, experiences allow us to provide some recommendation and expertise.”
Google has partnerships with some local schools and with the store opening, it plans to engage more with the local community. Google was welcomed at the preview by state Sen. Catherine Blakespear and San Diego City Councilmember Stephen Whitburn.
The preview was also attended by Google superfans, who were treated to tote bags, beverages and cookies.
Camacho emphasized that the store welcomes not just superfans.
“We’re here for everybody,” he said. “Experts and novices.”
