Jim Rockford is back on the case at NBC — and he won’t be the only private investigator on the network in 2026-27.
Ahead of its upfront presentation on Monday, the network has picked up for new series for next season — two dramas and two comedies. The dramas are a Rockford Files reboot starring David Boreanaz as the title character and Line of Fire (formerly Protection), which follows a family of federal law enforcement officials caught up in a conspiracy. The comedies are Sunset P.I., starring Jake Johnson, and Newlyweds, with Tea Leoni and Tim Daly (who are also married in real life).
All four shows come from Universal Television and were part of a larger than usual (for recent years, at least) group of eight pilots NBC ordered this year. The network has passed on the remaining four pilots — dramas Key Witness starring Emily Deschanel, Puzzled starring Damon Wayans Jr. and What the Dead Know starring Taylor Schilling, and an untitled comedy with Jane Lynch and Katey Sagal.
“Our creative teams, led by Lisa Katz at NBC and Erin Underhill at Universal Television, delivered an exceptional pilot slate, developing eight standout projects that reflect our ambition,” said Pearlena Igbokwe, chairman of NBC Entertainment, Peacock Scripted and Television Studios for NBCUniversal. “While we often hear the phrase embarrassment of riches, it truly applies in this case. This process allowed us to take big swings, and we landed on shows that we think can truly break through.”
All of NBC’s pilots filmed in the United States. The three comedies were based on the Universal lot in Los Angeles, and the dramas were split between New York and Atlanta. NBC notes that the pilots resulted in some 4,000 jobs among cast, crew and production teams.
Below is a rundown of NBC’s new series (and keep track of all pickups, renewals and cancellations with The Hollywood Reporter’s network scorecard).
‘The Rockford Files’
Logline: A contemporary update on the classic series of the same name. Newly paroled after doing time for a crime he didn’t commit, James Rockford (Boreanaz) returns to his life as a private investigator using his charm and wit to solve cases around Los Angeles. It doesn’t take long for his quest for legitimacy to land him squarely in the crosshairs of both local police and organized crime.
Cast: Boreanaz, Michaela McManus, Felix Solis, Jacki Weaver.
Team: Writer/EP Mike Daniels, EPs Carl Beverly and Sarah Timberman, co-EP Chris Leanza, director/EP Greg Mottola (pilot only).
‘Line of Fire’
Logline: A family of law enforcement agents bridges personal differences and crosses professional boundaries as they tackle cases for the FBI, U.S. Marshals, Secret Service and Department of Justice. After a seemingly cut-and-dry case turns into a deadly conspiracy, they must use the expertise from a lifetime of protecting civilians and politicians to protect one another and bring the killer to justice … even if it means betraying their sworn code.
Cast: Peter Krause, Hope Davis, Kat Cunning, Tommy O’Brien, Taylor Bloom, Charlie Barnett.
Team: W/EP Josh Safran, EPs Jenna Bush Hager and Ben Spector, D/EP Rebecca Thomas (pilot only).
‘Newlyweds’
Logline: A later-in-life love story about a free-spirited woman and a buttoned-up professor who marry impetuously after a whirlwind courtship.
Cast: Tea Leoni, Tim Daly; Jamie Lee Curtis will recur.
Team: W/EP Gail Lerner, EPs Eric and Kim Tannenbaum (The Tannenbaum Company), Jamie Lee Curtis, Scott Schwartz and Lionsgate Television, D/EP Pam Fryman (pilot only).

Cast: Jake Johnson, Jane Levy, Langston Kerman, Mary Shalaby, Keith David.
Team: W/EPs Dan Goor and Luke Del Tredici, D/EP Akiva Schaffer (pilot only)
