California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) sectional meets are on tap for this week, but one big name won’t be competing.
Luka Mijatovic, who in March swam the fastest time ever in the 1000 free and became the third-fastest performer of all-time in the 500 free, has not entered this weekend’s CIF North Coast Section Championship meet, scheduled for Friday and Saturday at College of Marin.
Mijatovic was the state champion in both the 200 free and 500 free at last year’s CIF state meet swimming for Foothill High School in Pleasanton. He also won the 200 free (1:34.44) and 500 free (4:14.17) at last year’s sectional meet.
Committed to Texas, Mijatovic is a junior who has one more season of high school swimming left, should he opt to compete at that level.
With Mijatovic out of the field, it obviously creates an opportunity for others to step into the forefront. Here are some notable swimmers to watch at the North Coast sectional meet:
Brooke Bennett, a senior at Granada who has committed to Georgia, is seeded 1st in the girls’ 200 IM and 2nd in the 500 free. Bennett is the defending state champion in the 500 free, but is seeded 2nd at the Sectional meet behind Carondelet sophomore Bella Ferguson. Bennett was 6th in the 200 IM at the state meet last year. Also in the girls’ competition, Las Lomas junior Tayla Campanile, a BYU commit who was 10th in the state last year in the 100 breast, is the top seed in that event at the sectional. On the boys’ side, Amador Valley junior Cade Vieler, who has committed to Princeton, is seeded 1st in both the 100 free and 100 back. Vieler competed in the 100 back and 200 free at last year’s state meet. Ben Nonaka, a senior at Northgate who has committed to Illinois-Chicago, is seeded 1st in the 200 IM and 3rd in the 100 back in the boys’ event.
