20th FRENCH ELITE SHORT COURSE CHAMPIONSHIPS
Thursday, October 29th – Sunday, November 1st Angers, France SCM (25m) SwimSwam Preview Meet Central Day 1 Recap | Day 2 Recap Live ResultsFrance’s newest phenom Sauveur Cristofini has broken a pair of French Age Records in a single swim on Saturday evening in Angers at the French Short Course Championships.
Cristofini, who is still 16 until the end of November, swam 1:41.88 for 3rd place in the final of the 200 free. His previous personal best was a 1:43.61 set in October 2025, which is the French U16 Record. His latest swim crushed Yannick Agnel‘s official U17 Record of 1:44.06 from 2009 (which Cristofini was already faster than), and also slid under Agnel’s U18 Record of 1:41.95 from 2010.
France tracks age records by year of birth, not date of birth, so Cristofini counts as 17 for French Record purposes.
According to World Aquatics’ all-time rankings (which are rarely complete, but in short course meters are the most complete all-time data set), that is the fastest-ever time by a 16-year-old. Only two swimmers have ever been faster at 17, per the AQUA database: Ian Thorpe, who went 1:41.10 in 2000, and Kliment Kolesnikov, who went 1:41.75 in 2017.
Both of those swimmers would later set World Records in various events.
Cristofini is also now France’s 5th-fastest swimmer in the event at any age. Roman Fuchs, who won the race on Saturday, also jumped up the French all-time rankings to 3rd in 1:41.47.

Yannick Agnel, 1:39.70 – 2012 Leon Marchand, 1:40.91 – 2024 Roman Fuchs, 1:41.47 – 2026 Maxime Grousset, 1:41.56 – 2022 Sauveur Cristofini, 1:41.88 – 2026Grousset finished 2nd on Saturday in 1:41.70.
Cristofini will begin competing for the University of Florida in the United States in fall 2027. Last summer, in long course, he dropped a 1:45.74 in the 200 free. That ranks him 4th-fastest all time in French history in long course.
Cristofini also swam a best time of 3:38.84 in the 400 free earlier in the meet, which is another new French Age Record for U17s. His previous best of 3:39.69 was already the fastest ever by a French junior. That also crushes Agnel’s official French Age Record for 17-year-olds (3:43.55).
He still has entries in the 100 free and 200 IM remaining. He scratched the 800 free.
