Insiders Are Already Dropping Way-Too-Early 2027 NFL Mock Drafts (And I’m Already Sensing a Theme With Their Bears Picks) ...Middle East

Patrick and Matt did so much of the heavy lifting covering the Chicago Bears’ picks during the 2026 NFL Draft that I wasn’t going to force them to read any more draft content if it wasn’t necessary. This, of course, leaves me to take a look at the way-too-early mock drafts that are already dropping for 2027. Usually, this type of fodder is left for Bullets. But when I saw a theme developing with these ridiculously early picks, I found myself wanting to expand my thoughts.

Will the Chicago Bears look to bolster defense in the 2027 NFL Draft?

To be clear, it is wayyyyy too early to put too much stock in next year’s NFL Draft. But with that being said, I found it interesting that three mock drafts (including two from a pair of respected names in that realm) had the Bears taking *DEFENSIVE* players.

A quick rundown of three mock drafts that I found to be interesting.

ESPN’s Jordan Reid sends Miami defensive tackle Ahmad Moten Sr. to the Bears with the 16th pick

This is what Reid had to say about his selection:

The Bears went surprisingly light on the interior defensive line in last week’s draft, waiting until the sixth round to address the position. Moten is an explosive disruptor who finished with nine tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks last season. He has quick and powerful hands to swipe away interior blockers and is a stout run defender who can stand his ground in gaps. Moten needs to play with better pad level, as his aggressiveness can cause him to play high and be pushed out of position, but he could be the Grady Jarrett heir apparent in Chicago.

While I would have preferred the Bears find some high-profile talent to add to the defensive line during the 2026 NFL Draft, perhaps the 2027 offseason will give this team a better opportunity to make significant changes in the trenches. I’m not talking about tinkering here and there with depth like we’ve seen this offseason. Instead, I am talking about a full-scale defensive line shakeup — one that looks like what we saw the front office execute with the offensive line during the 2025 offseason.

Fans won’t want to hear it. And, frankly, I don’t love that I’m writing it. But the reality is the Bears will be better positioned to make improvements to the defensive line next offseason than they are right now. Changes to the defensive line next year could begin with potential cuts of Grady Jarrett and Dayo Odeyingbo, which could create $28.5 million in cap savings at the cost of just an $8.5 million dead money hit between the two transactions.

The Athletic’s Dane Brugler has the Bears taking cornerback Kelley Jones with the 18th pick

This is what Brugler had to say about his selection:

Listed at 6-4, Jones has rare speed and ability for a player his size, which will draw obvious attention from NFL teams.

When I started working my way through this post, I thought I’d see nothing but defensive linemen picked by the Bears in these mock NFL Draft exercises. So you could imagine the look of surprise on my face when I saw a cornerback go to Chicago. Then again, I should not have been surprised. Not. One. Bit.

CHICAGO BEARS 2026 NFL DRAFT CLASS — EVERY PLAYER, EVERY PICK

The starting cornerback position opposite Jaylon Johnson is up for grabs. Maybe Tyrique Stevenson takes the gig and runs with it in the final year of his rookie contract. Perhaps 2023 draft classmate Terell Smith pushes his way into the starting lineup after an ACL injury during the preseason last year kept him off the field. Don’t rule out Malik Muhammad as a starting option just because he was a Day 3 pick.

This CBS Sports mock NFL Draft has the Bears taking Oregon edge defender Matayo Uiagalelei

More from Cooper Petagna:

The younger brother of DJ Uiagalelei, Matayo has carved out his own path in Eugene as one of the most talented pass rushers in the country. A former two-way standout at St. John Bosco, he pairs suddenness and athleticism with a dense frame, offering three-down versatility. While his motor can run hot and cold, the talent is undeniable.

Two of the three mock drafts we explored had the Bears taking a defensive lineman. All three had Chicago’s football team selecting a player on the defensive side of the ball. That seems fitting.

I think the point Petagna makes above about the Oregon prospect offering the ability to be a three-down player is an important distinction to make when we look at prospect fits for Defensive Coordinator Dennis Allen next year.

This front office could have used one of its early picks to take any number of prospects who projected to be two-down players early in their careers. Instead, it waited until later to address defensive line needs. The takeaway here should be that the Bears are prioritizing players who can contribute on all three downs, which helps the DC better disguise his intentions. After all, it is easier for offenses to counter what defenses could bring if they know that particular personnel being on the field means certain things.

In the end, my biggest takeaway is that a bunch of quarterbacks are slated to go early in 2027 mock NFL Drafts. ESPN’s mock draft has four signal callers going in Round 1. The Athletic’s mock draft has five first-round QBs. Meanwhile, the mock draft from CBS Sports has three. If 3-5 quarterbacks go off the board before the Bears go on the clock, then it would push some talented prospects at other positions down the board and into the front office’s laps.

Then again, Chicago’s front office will be picking 32nd. So perhaps the prospects forecasted above won’t be on the Bears’ board when they go on the clock. In any case, I’m happy to be done with mock draft content for the time being. Phew.
