This is the time of year when I look for signs of year-over-year player development.
And I think this quote from D’Andre Swift about Caleb Williams scratches that itch.

Some might look past this quote, discard it, or not give it a second thought. But not me. Because if anyone knows what it is supposed to look like in Ben Johnson’s system as the head coach enters his second year with the team, it is D’Andre Swift.

Keep in mind that few players on this roster have as much of a history with the Bears head coach as running back D’Andre Swift. This will be his sixth season playing on a team with Johnson on its staff. Swift has seen Johnson grow from being a tight ends coach in 2020, to adding passing-game coordinator responsibilities in 2021, to serving as offensive coordinator in 2023 with Detroit. Now, he gets a front-row seat to the Ben Johnson head-coaching experience.
In other words, if Swift says Caleb Williams is where he needs to be with the understanding and command of this offense, I believe him. Because few people know what that is supposed to look like more than Swift.
In the end, I obviously want to see that “night and day” difference show up on the stat sheet and in the win column. But that can’t happen unless good habits begin forming at training camp. And it sounds like that is exactly what is happening for Caleb Williams and the Bears.
