Nehir Oner, a free and fly specialist from Turkey, has announced her commitment to swim for University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill beginning in the fall of 2026.

Oner will be heading to Chapel Hill from Istanbul, Turkey, where she currently trains with Fenerbahçe Sports Club. A versatile threat in the water, she excels at free, fly and IM.
At the 2025 Turkey Sports Club Long Course Youth, Junior and Open Age Swimming Championship in August, Oner turned in a series of strong performances. She placed 5th in the 100 fly (1:02.81), 8th in the 200 fly (2:21.68) and 18th in the 200 IM (2:27.18). She also took 11th in the 50 fly in 28.80 after posting a best time of 28.48 during prelims.
Oner recently competed at the Turkish Youth, Junior and Open Age National Team Selection Trials (LCM) in mid-April, where she earned a second swim in all three of her events. She snagged the runner-up spot in the 200 free (2:04.76) and the 200 fly (2:20.20) and placed 6th in the 100 fly (1:03.06).
Most of Oner’s lifetime bests still stand from previous seasons, including her top times in both the 100 fly (1:01.71) and 200 fly (2:13.26), which she set at the 2024 European Aquatics Junior Championships. She also holds personal best times of 58.80 in the 100 free from 2023 and 2:04.24 in the 200 free from 2024.

The Tarheels placed 7th at this past season’s conference championships in February before sending eight athletes to compete at the 2026 NCAA Division I Women’s Championship, where they finished 24th overall.
To earn a second swim at the 2026 Atlantic Coast Championships, it took times of 53.31/2:00.11 in the 100/200 fly, 48.91/1:46.88 in the 100/200 free and 1:59.35 in the 200 IM, putting Oner outside the cutoff in each of her top events. On the team itself, Oner is currently poised to rank 3rd in the 200 fly, 6th in the 100 fly, 200 free and 200 IM and 9th in the 100 free next season based on her projected converted times, bringing added depth to the team.
Oner will be joined in the pool next season by fellow incoming recruits Catherine Pawlaski, Morgan Farlow, Defne Tanig and Kenzie Sellars, who should all make for strong training partners over their four years together.
