Morgan Thompson, a rising senior at Maple Grove Senior High School in Minnesota, will join the Iowa Hawkeyes next fall (2027) to further her swimming career. Thompson is a Winter Junior Nationals qualifier and swims for Aquajets Swim Team.

At Winter Juniors – West in December, Thompson swam to a 2:00.88 best time in the 200 back, which was good for 42nd place. She also led off Aquajets’ 400 free relay with a PB of 51.30, helping her team take 18th.
Thompson has made immense strides this season: at last year’s NCSA Spring Championships, she set a PB of 4:28.48 in her 400 IM — at the 2026 edition of the meet, she brought that personal best down to a 4:19.45. It’s a similar story for her 200 IM, as she notched a 2:01.97 at the IL Speedo Grand Challenge in November to drop over 5 seconds off her 2024-2025 best.
During those same NCSA Spring Championships, which was Thompson’s most recent meet, she hit PBs in the 100 breast (1:03.95) and 200 free (1:52.37), the latter of which was set while leading off Aquajets’ 800 free relay. She also split times of 23.23 and 50.95 on Aquatjets’ 200 and 400 free relays, which placed 5th and 4th, respectively. Other results included her 4:19.45 400 IM, where she finished 18th, along with a 2:02.96 in the 200 back and a 2:03.06 in the 200 IM.

The Hawkeyes were led by freshman Payton Flowers, a sprint free/fly specialist who scored 39 points. Her meet was highlighted by an 8th place finish in the 50 free (22.15) and 11th place finish in the 100 fly (52.49).
While Thompson’s times aren’t yet of scoring caliber, she’ll provide a huge boost to Iowa’s IM group. Both her 200 and 400 IMs would have ranked 2nd on their roster this past season, behind only Olivia Swalley — a rising senior who will have graduated by the time Thompson arrives in Iowa City. Though Thompson doesn’t have a clear 3rd event, both her 200 back and 500 free would have been the 4th fastest of Iowa’s team.
Thompson will join Rachel Johnson and Sarah Pelinkovic in Iowa’s class of 2031. Pelinkovic is a mid distance freestyler with PBs of 1:49.9/4:54.3 in the 200/500, while Johnson excels in the backstrokes (54.4/1:57.8).
The Hawkeyes are bringing in a strong recruiting class this fall, which includes the likes of Illinois high school state champion Yaya Nieckula (53.4 100 fly) and YMCA Nationals runner-up Klare Pilger (54.2/1:57.5 back). Together, these two classes give Iowa a solid foundation to continue moving up the Big Ten standings in the coming years.
