The Cubs began this game without Alex Bregman (hurt toe) but with Dansby Swanson (healthy). And they ended it … the opposite way. Bregman came in for a key pinch-hit RBI knock, while Swanson left the game with a left glute cramp after a 2-RBI double and a stolen base.
Either way, it all amounted to a streak-snapping win over the Padres in San Diego. So while things may not be going totally great for the Cubs at the moment (by which I mostly mean the injuries, though they had also lost three in a row before tonight), it’s hard not to be happy with a shot at the series win tomorrow.
On the West Coast, against these red-hot Padres, and with this many injuries, that’s all you can ask for.
My favorite part of this game was the fact that six of the Cubs’ eight RBI tonight came with two outs. An RBI always feels better with two outs. Nico Hoerner did his thing earlier in the game (he is just so good in those moments), Bregman got his injured, pinch-hit knock, and Pete Crow-Armstrong launched a pretty massive homer 410 feet over the center field wall. All with two outs. Oh, and PCA is heating up. I’m telling you.
I’m going to give The Ankin Law: “Making it Personal” Player of the Game honors to Bregman, who was 2-2 plus an important and late RBI. Along with the game-tying homer in L.A, that was the second relatively big moment he’s had late in a ballgame in the past week. It’s really fun to see him come through, and that’s especially true tonight when he was otherwise supposed to be resting an injured foot.
