When a frustrating spin knocked Valtteri Bottas out of last weekend’s Malaysian Grand Prix, the Cadillac driver didn't jump on a short flight to Singapore.
Instead, he grabbed his helmet and set off on a 200-plus-mile cross-border bike ride across the Malay Peninsula.
The idea originated as a passing joke from his partner, pro cyclist Tiffany Cromwell, given the proximity of Kuala Lumpur to Marina Bay. Intrigued, Bottas mapped a route with local cyclists, complete with a nearby support car.
Covering roughly 100 miles on Monday and Tuesday, he saved a shorter leg for Wednesday as a "recovery ride" ahead of Friday practice at Marina Bay.
While the grueling equatorial humidity meant his saddle felt "like a cheese grinder," Bottas viewed the intense effort as great heat acclimatization for Singapore. The real drama, however, began when the sun went down.
Holding court with journalists in the Singapore paddock on Thursday, Bottas broke down the wildest moments of his journey.
Midnight in the jungle
Riding unpaved single tracks in the pitch black under a heavy canopy was a brand-new experience for the seasoned cyclist. Relying solely on a mounted bike light, the sheer solitude and noise of the nocturnal rainforest quickly turned psychological.

“And what was the wildest part? The riding at night in the jungle,” he said. “The noise in there is like...Then your mind starts to play games of what is out there. Who knows what is out there?
“Then you just need to crack on and keep going. Riding with your lights at night, that was probably the most epic part in the forest.”
Snakes, lizards, and livestock
Navigating in the dark meant constant surprise encounters with Southeast Asian wildlife. From slithering reptiles to uncooperative farm animals, the route kept his reflexes razor-sharp.
“I saw some snakes, which I was a little bit worried about, but actually they were pretty chill,” Bottas recounted.
“I saw one cobra. I saw one python just crossing the path in front of me. I saw some of those big lizards that you also see here – one was on the path, I had to jump over it with the bike. So I saw it like last minute.
“Got chased by one dog. Got stuck behind a group of cows on a small track. Eventually they moved away.”
Overall, Bottas took the remote conditions in stride, telling reporters: “At least you know that in the wild there's nothing that is going to hunt you. I don't think there's any tigers or anything.”
Clearing the mind for Marina Bay
Beyond physical conditioning, the four-day trek offered a vital mental reset following a rough weekend on track for Cadillac, who remain looking for their first point of the season.

“It was a fun adventure,” he said. “I'm really glad I did it because like the locals said, I saw almost the whole of Malaysia in four days and the wild side of it.
“Without my bike I would never see those things. So if there's something in the future that makes sense and that I can recover for racing, sure.”
