LaBrae bats go cold in home loss to Southeast ...Middle East

LEAVITTSBURG — Each of the last three seasons, LaBrae has finished atop its league. Tuesday’s game against Southeast would have put the Vikings in the driver’s seat to make it four in a row, but the Pirates had other plans, downing LaBrae, 6-2.

“We have to regroup, we have to clean up defensively and we have to do the mental things right,” Vikings coach Ed Anthony said. “Baseball is a good 30-40% mental and when you have an experienced team like we do, you shouldn’t be making the mistakes we did today. We start seven seniors, so we shouldn’t have those mental mistakes. Normally, we have an inning where we’d like to get back, but we’ve been able to overcome that. When you play on the edge like that sometimes, you’re going to get bitten, and we got bit today.

“Kudos to Southeast. They’re a well-coached team, they played well. They played some smallball, which we played on them yesterday, and that’s how we were able to plate a couple across.”

LaBrae took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the first, with both Austin Rowe and Landon Brunstetter each rounding home. Brunstetter knocked Rowe home with a double. But unfortunately for the Vikings, that would be the only time they’d score. LaBrae got baserunners on, but were unable to string the necessary hits together.

“We’ve got to get better hits,” Anthony said. “We faced a pitcher that wasn’t that fast today. He’s steady, but at the same time, we didn’t adjust that well at the plate, and it showed. We had a couple nice hits here and there, and then whether it was the bottom of the order or the top of the order, we just couldn’t put a string of hits together to produce runs. That’s baseball at times.”

The Vikings split the season series with Southeast, beating them 3-1 on Monday.

Anthony hopes this game was an anomaly. The Vikings’ next game, on Thursday at Harding, gives LaBrae (9-4, 7-1) a chance to correct the course. Limiting mental mistakes will be essential.

“Whether we’re playing Harding coming up or any of these teams, you can’t make that many mistakes in a game and hope to win that game,” Anthony said. “It’s like I told the kids, our goals are still in front of us, we still want to win the league again, we still want to go and win a district, but if we play like we played today, we’re not going to accomplish our goals. … We still have things that we have to work on, and our hitting has to get a little bit better, one through nine. I think we can accomplish that, but the kids got to understand, and they’re disappointed right now, but they understand what’s ahead of them.

“Everybody wants to knock you off when you win your league three years in a row. Everybody’s going to give you their best shot, and we got it today from Southeast. They got the job done, and we didn’t.”
