‘Brave’ King is coming to US, says Trump – as security ramped up after shooting ...Middle East

News by : (inews) -

Donald Trump has praised King Charles’s “bravery” ahead of his arrival in Washington DC for a state visit amid heightened security risks following a failed assassination attempt against the US President.

Trump had to be rushed out of the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner on Saturday evening when a gunman attempted to storm the gala event, targeting the President and senior US officials.

It comes as Buckingham Palace is holding talks with the White House over possible changes to the King’s trip due to fears over the danger posed to the monarch in the event of a copycat attack.

Security experts suggested that there were likely to be fresh risk assessments to avoid the King becoming “collateral damage” in the event of another attempt on Trump’s life.

Speaking after the attack, Trump said of the King’s visit: “He’s a great guy, and we look forward to it. He’s really a fantastic person and a tremendous representative, and he’s brave.”

The US President told Fox News: “We’re gonna have a great time. And he represents his nation like nobody else can do it.”

King Charles and Queen Camilla are due to arrive in the US for a four day trip as part of the commemorations of the 250th anniversary of American independence.

But the shooting has left serious question marks over the planned trip, with the Palace suggesting that certain elements of the visit could be changed in light of the heightened security risk.

A Palace spokesman said: “His Majesty is being kept fully informed of developments and is greatly relieved to hear that the President, First Lady and all guests have been unharmed.

“As you would expect, a number of discussions will be taking place throughout the day to discuss with US colleagues and our respective teams to what degree the events of Saturday evening may or may not impact on the operational planning for the Visit.”

Video footage showed the president being bundled from the room by secret service agents who also grabbed vice-president JD Vance by the shoulders and escorted him to safety.

The King and Queen are understood to have reached out privately to the president and his wife, Melania, to express their sympathies with all those affected on the night, and their gratitude to the security services who prevented further injury.

Sir Keir Starmer held a call with Trump on Sunday morning when he extended his best wishes following the “shocking scenes”, Downing Street said.

“He expressed his relief that the President and First Lady were safe and wished a speedy recovery to the officer injured,” a spokesman said.

Security experts told The i Paper that the attack in Washington DC on Saturday was unlikely to change plans too greatly, given any such visit comes with a high degree of risk.

Simon Morgan, founder and senior advisor at Trojan Consultancy and a former SO14 royalty protection officer to senior members of the royal family, said: “The fact that it’s the King representing His Majesty’s government – it’s just high risk. It’s not off the scale that you can’t do it, you just have to put in a lot of mitigation and you have to put in a lot of contingencies.”

A former military officer, who has been involved with planning state visits and asked not to be named, said the real risk would be the King becoming “collateral damage” in another attempt on Trump.

“Anything involving the King is going to be far more locked down, it won’t be held in a public space,” the security consultant said.

“The real risk assessment that they’ll be undertaking is how much is the association with Trump going to threaten him, because any shooters are probably not going to be after the King, they’re going to be after Trump, and there’s collateral damage.”

Douglas Farthing, another security consultant, who helped plan the arrangements around the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings with President Trump, Emannuel Macron, and the Queen, said any event space would be “top of my agenda”.

“There’ll be a risk assessment. They’ll now look at this event and they’ll look at that risk assessment and they’ll try and see, are there any other ways we can mitigate risk after this attack?”
