A Georgia native, Van Peteghem attends South Forsyth High School and swims year-round with the renowned SwimAtlanta club program.

His first big meet of the 2025-26 season was Winter Juniors – East, his first time qualifying to compete at the meet. He placed 17th in the 500 free (4:27.56) and 41st in the 100 free (45.24), setting then-personal bests, and clocked a season-best 1:39.73 for 53rd in the 200 free.

Next up was the Georgia High School Association (GHSA) 6A State Championships in February, his fourth-straight year qualifying to represent South Forsyth. He had his best-ever showing: he defended his 200 free title (1:36.76) and won the 500 free (4:27.04) in a new lifetime best, anchored the 400 free relay (45.39) to gold after settling for bronze in 2025, and split 20.65 on the runner-up 200 free relay. Prior to 2025, he had always opted for the shorter free events, taking bronze in the 100 in 2025 as his only other time near a podium position.

Van Peteghem didn’t rest on his laurels for very long, as over the following weeks he headed to a pair of club meets to conclude the short course season, updating his personal bests across the board. At Best of the South, he won the 500 free (4:24.95), finished second in the 200 free (1:36.37), and placed 11th in the 50 free (20.74). At Greater Atlanta Divisionals, he won the 100 free, clocking his first two sub-45 swims in the event with a 44.82 in prelims and a 44.62 in the final.

Van Peteghem has been on a personal best-setting rampage over the course of the past 12 months, as he dropped nearly a full second in the 50 free, nearly a second and a half in the 100 free, three seconds in the 200 free, and a whopping seven and a half seconds in the 500 free.

A Division III program competing in the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference, MIT’s men’s team won their 17th consecutive conference title this past season before placing 14th at the NCAA Championships.

At conference, Van Peteghem’s personal bests would have won the 500 free by over four seconds, the 200 free by just under two seconds, and the 100 free by about a tenth, while placing sixth in the 50 free. His times also project well at the national level, as they would have placed him fourth in the 200 and fifth in the 500 at the D3 Championships, and he is not far off the 44.44 needed to crack the ‘B’ final in the 100 free.

On the team’s depth chart, Van Peteghem is projected to rank first in the 100, 200, and 500 free and third in the 50, making him a key contributor both individually and on the team’s free relays, which regularly dominate the conference field and challenge for top-eight finishes at NCAAs.

He will have no shortage of quality training partners on the roster. Sophomore Grant Hu clocked times of 1:36.94 and 4:24.95, the latter earning him fifth at NCAAs, while sophomores Nathan Kim (44.63) and Aaron Martin (44.85) and junior Bryce Roberts (20.27) have similar sprint PBs.

Joining Van Peteghem in Cambridge this fall are Jayden Chan (sprint free/fly), Jamie Brinsfield (sprint free/fly), Aasish Dangol (distance free/fly), Garic Shao (distance free/IM), Jake Jones (breast/IM), Andrew Koek (breast/IM), and Alexander Wong (sprint free). Van Peteghem leads the class in the 100, 200, and 500 free, while Chan (20.6/45.3), Brinsfield (20.7/44.7/1:39.2), Wong (20.9/46.2), and Dangol (1:39.3/4:29.6) all bring times within striking distance and should make for strong training partners over their four years together.
