For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.
Futures finalist Carson Phifer has announced his verbal commitment to swim for the University of California San Diego beginning in the fall of 2027.
“I am extremely excited to announce my verbal commitment to the University of California San Diego, where I will continue my athletic and academic career! I would like to sincerely thank my loving parents and friends for helping develop the swimmer and person I am today. I would also like to thank my coaches from Sandpipers, Coach Jake, Ron, Michael, and all the others I have had throughout the years. Finally, a special thank you to Coach Marko for giving me this opportunity. I am so excited to see what we can accomplish together! Go Tritons!”
A high school senior, Phifer currently trains with the Sandpipers of Nevada in Las Vegas, where he primarily specializes in the longer distances of free, back and IM.
Phifer recently competed at the Futures Championship (LCM) in Sacramento, where he earned a second swim in one event. He placed 16th in the 100 back in 59.60 after setting a best time of 59.09 during prelims, and he finished 17th in the 1500 free (16:40.76 – SB) and 67th in the 400 free (4:17.25).
At the 2025 Walnut Sectionals in December, Phifer logged a series of lifetime best performances. He placed 6th in the 400 IM (3:54.87 – PB), 9th in the 200 back (1:50.48) and 21st in the 500 free (4:36.61 – PB). He also set a best time in the 100 free (48.77) and 200 free (1:43.72) as the leadoff on both the 400 free relay and 800 free relay, respectively. A few weeks earlier, Phifer clocked a lifetime best time in the 1650 free (15:48.99) at the Winter Junior Championships.
Phifer still holds several personal best times from the 2024 CA/NV Speedo Winter Sectionals; at that meet, he clocked lifetime bests in the 50 back (25.12), 100 back (51.91) and 200 back (1:49.30).

Based on the results from the 2026 MPSF Championships, Phifer would have placed 11th in the 1650 free and landed in the ‘B’ final in the 400 IM and the ‘C’ final in the 200 free, 500 free, 100 back and 200 back. With another full season to go and the conference rosters having shifted, it remains to be seen exactly where Phifer may land when he joins the Tritons next season.
Currently set to join Phifer in San Diego next fall is Gavin Cameto (free/fly) from Walnut Creek, California, who should make for a strong training partner over their four years together.
