There was no Labor Day off for the Chicago Bears, who held a light practice on Monday at Halas Hall in preparation for their Week 1 matchup with the Carolina Panthers on Sunday.
The good news: running backs D’Andre Swift and Kyle Monangai were both on the field and participated in practice on Monday. Swift exited practice early last Thursday, but ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that he was dealing with cramping. Monangai has been sidelined for a few weeks but appears on track for a potential Week 1 return. Monangai hurt his knee when he got tangled with defensive tackle Grady Jarrett three weeks ago. Edge rusher Austin Booker was also practicing on Monday. The bad news: wide receiver Rome Odunze, who also left practice early with an apparent foot injury, was not present at practice today. We will get more details on the injury front this week when head coach Ben Johnson meets with the media and Chicago’s first official injury report of the season is released on Wednesday. As Luis wrote this morning, former Chicago Bears fullback Matt Suhey passed away at 68 on Sunday. Suhey, 68, played 148 games over 10 seasons in the NFL — all with the Bears. He also appeared in nine playoff games, including all three of the team’s wins en route to winning Super Bowl XX in January 1986. The Penn State product was a second-round pick (46th overall) in the 1980 NFL Draft. He finished his career with 828 carries, 2,946 rushing yards, and 25 total touchdowns. CHGO’s Adam Jahns wrote about Bears rookie safety Dillon Thieneman, who will make his NFL debut on Sunday in Carolina. Jahns’ feature includes commentary from a variety of coaches and players, providing excellent insight into the rookie’s development during his first months as a pro.Becoming the Bears’ defensive “eraser” | Tracking the development of Dillon Thieneman Hear from … Dennis AllenBen JohnsonAl Harris Matt Giordano Jaylon JohnsonCam Lewis Rome OdunzeCole KmetColston Loveland My story for @CHGO_Sports t.co/WXGG2JEIjI
— Adam Jahns (@adamjahns) September 7, 2026 Matt and I both took turns predicting the Bears’ 2026 schedule game by game today. Matt was a touch more conservative than I was. I have Chicago at 12-5 this season. I will say, I find it hard to believe that some find it so hard to believe the Bears can win 12 games, one more game than they won last season, in year two of Ben Johnson, an improved offense, and a defense that isn’t much better, but also not worse than it was last season. But hey, to each their own, I guess. Some semi-Bears-adjacent news on the college football front …Ex-Stephen F. Austin star linebacker Jaydon Southard is also set to transfer to Oklahoma, sources tell me and @BrodyLusk247.Southard, whom @GeorgeStoia had reported as a possibility for OU, is already enrolled in school and in Norman, per sources. — Matt Zenitz (@mzenitz) September 7, 2026 The Cole Kmet effect, via rookie tight end Sam Roush: “He’s super detail-oriented. It’s been really cool to watch him go through his process. He’s doing like an hour-long warm-up before practice, which is pretty impressive that he is able to come in and do it every single day. It’s been great. He’s a guy that does it the right way. And it’s awesome to be in a room with guys like Cole and Colston (Loveland) and be on the team with a lot of really great players. That greatness rubs off as long as you’re subscribing to the culture and continuing to get closer to guys.” Kmet has been a model locker room guy since Johnson arrived, and shortly thereafter drafted Colston Loveland to effectively replace Kmet as the team’s No. 1 tight end. Even with Johnson drafting another tight end in Roush this spring, Kmet continues to be a great leader and example at Halas Hall.THE BN BEARS PODCAST LIVES HERE: Apple | Spotify | YouTube
